Hello@all,

I've installed aptosid in my netbook, but for some reason
I can't login as root nor change from one user to root.
I thought, password was wrong.
But after I edited via liv-cd the /etc/shadow, so that it looked like:
      Code:
root::10852:0:99999:7:::

nothing changed, everytime "Authetification Error"
So next idea was to a look for the /etc/group ...
I was suprised to read something like this
      Code:

root:x:0:
daemon:x:1:
bin:x:2:

Is this normal group config for aptosid ??

Anyway, I changed it to something like this:
      Code:

root:x:0:root
bin:x:1:root,bin,daemon
daemon:x:2:

But again nothing changed in my situation...

Does anyone has a clue?

greeting Inkarnat

P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

Do a chroot in your installed system and set a new password for root. In the past it was possible to start the system in runlevel s. In this runlevel your weren't asked for the root password. But IIRC this is changed.

I have compared your changes with my system files. I advice you to draw back all the changes you have made before changing your root password.

If this doesn't help why not reinstall the system. While setting up the installation you were asked for a root password. While you are running the installation check the keyboard layout and use your expected keyboard layout when you are typing the root password.

thanks kris99 !

Chroot and re-setting of root-passwd
-> Can't login as root

So I reinstalled
-> Can't login as root at the beginning, but when logged in as user I can change.
(Didn't test this when I chroot from live-system... Sad )

Maybe this is normal? If you boot your aptosid-sys, you are not allowed to log in as root with the gui-login?

Exactly, because never login as root in graphical environment.

The only time you should ever login directly as root is in init 3 (console mode) and NEVER in X/KDE. If you ever need to do anything as root while in X, just open a terminal and type "su" (without quotes) and enter your root user's password. Then you can enter commands as root. When done you just close the Konsole window.
