Dear all,

I am pretty sure this is a hardware issue, but I was wondering if the following messages help pin-point the problem. I am pretty sure it is related to my DVD drive(s).

I get

[  470.585016] ata7: SATA link down (SStatus 100 SControl 300)
[  470.585028] ata7: EH complete
[  470.594938] ata7: hard resetting link

over and over in dmesg. Then,

[  551.103011] ata7: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
[  554.877013] ata7: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[  554.877019] ata7: hard resetting link
[  560.800010] ata7: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=-19)
[  564.880013] ata7: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[  564.880018] ata7: hard resetting link
[  570.756011] ata7: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=-19)
[  599.928012] ata7: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[  599.928017] ata7: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps
[  599.928020] ata7: hard resetting link
[  604.933012] ata7: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[  604.933018] ata7: reset failed, giving up
[  604.933026] ata7: EH complete

Also, at boot the BIOS takes a while to find the DVD drive. The odd thing is that I replaced the drive (and cable). It worked well for a while and now I am having the same problem.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Best to all,

Have you tried disabling AHCI in the bios

No. I'll try that! Thanks!

With "dmesg | grep ata7" you can get your problematic device name. While I would first try replacing the cable (and/or checking its connectors), it is quite likely that your device is broken. Disabling AHCI is usually not a solution, even less if the breakage occured suddenly after months of working fine.
