Post subject: Unusable text console on intel i5 integrated graphics
I just did a clean install on a new machine with intel i5 integrated graphics. Graphical mode works fine, but I cannot get a usable text console.

I have taken 'quiet' out of the grub command line and I get a normal boot sequence for a while. Then it does a mode change and the screen gets scrambled. Then it starts X and is OK again. When I do ctrl-alt-F1 to get to a console to do a dist-upgrade, the screen is scrambled so I cannot see what I type.

I have also tried vga=0, and also removing vga completely. These keep me from booting up at all.

In the dmesg at the time the scrambling occurs, I get this:

      Code:

firmware-linux-nonfree is installed?

i915 does not require any firmware, so installing firmware-linux-nonfree can't make any difference - installing the current 2.6.36 kernel however might.

I tried that too. It did make a difference, but not in a good way. The same symptoms occurred as before. In addition, while in X, I get an occasional flash of the whole screen. This happens several times per minute, at irregular intervals.

Worse yet. Blank screen. No X; no console. Could not even ssh in from another machine to reboot.

to reboot when console does not work, maybe this page helps?
http://manual.aptosid.com/en/wm-kde-en.htm#desk-freeze

(but I'd try first pretending that it's only graphical problem,
typing as if in login prompt, "root" and password, and "init 0"....
it it does not work, then the manual page may help...)

Enough hassle. I popped in an nvidia card and everything works properly.
