Installation - (Solved) Dist-upgrade impossible

Post subject: (Solved) Dist-upgrade impossible
Hi everyone,

tried to do a dist-upgrade this morning, which resulted in the following error:

      Quote:
Preconfiguring packages ...
Reading database ... dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
unable to open files list file for package 'libkdesu5': Input/output error
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

Tried a "dpkg --configure -a", but any further attempt to dist-upgrade results in the message listed above.

Reinstalling libkdesu5 leads to the same error message and removing it completely would obviously make kde inoperable so that step wasn't taken.

Sort of helpless what to do now, so any sort of help would be welcome - adthanksvance

      Code:

So, the problem is that dpkg can't read the file
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libkdesu5.list
for whatever reason?

Probably your harddisk has failure there?

I fear the file doesn't exist (anymore) or is badly broken (includes binary).

Both should NEVER EVER happen. Have you shutdown your system recently uncleanly? (power lose maybe?)

      Code:
cat /var/lib/dpkg/info/libkdesu5.list

Could be interesting. My reads
      Code:
/.
/usr
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/libkdesu.so.5.4.0
/usr/lib/kde4
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu_stub
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5/README.gz
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5/TODO.gz
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5/copyright
/usr/share/doc/libkdesu5/NEWS.Debian.gz
/usr/lib/libkdesu.so.5

But i fear this will only lead you to the next fatal error. As said, this should never happen - so its either a hardware fault (power lose, faulty harddisk/ram/mainboard, …) or a user error (rm -rf /var/lib or alike). The only clean solution would be change your broken hardware and install fresh…

Hi again,

thanks for all the replies.

So if this really is a hardware failure, it must be one concerning RAM, I think. That means I'm gonna swallow that bitter pill and follow your advice to reinstall on a clean and intact system.

I thought it might have been apate's kernel version as I'm still using a partition with keres on the same hardware that runs flawlessly. Bad luck Sad

Bye for now
