My 1 year old computer (Acer Travel Mate 8371-733G32N 33,7 cm (13,3 Zoll) Notebook (Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300, 1,3GHz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Intel GMA 4500MHD) had a displaydamage, and Amazon.de gave me all my money back...
It was a laptop from warehousedeals, and I chose it because of the non glossy display.
So, my question now is, what would you recommend to buy.
I would prefer an intel-prozessor and definitly something between 12-14" with non refelctive display.
What you you reccomend, what would you not? |

Looks very interesting! I never had any dell... How is the battery?
I found also a good one:
The Acer travelmate 8372 seems to be the succesor of my old computer. But this one has Nvidia Graphics. Since I never had anything else under Linux than intelgraphics, I don't know how the actual situation is...
Is Nvidia running under aptosid? |

@Slam:
I remeber somethng, that 2 kernelgenerations ago there was something banned from the kernel, so nvidia did'nt work...
I really don't need 3D, just accurate 2D... (not VESA!)
So what is the actual state? |

2 different issues:
1) Nothing was "banned" from Aptosid kernels, simply a patch was applied which meanwhile is part of every modern kernel. The closed source nvidia driver was not able to handle this patch for some time, which took us some time to recognize in tests. This was not intended, while certain people did spread the myth that we have done it "intentionally".
2) If you are not in need of 3d, the free nouveau driver is fully ok for you, and we ship it automaticly with Aptosid.
Greetings,
Chris |

The Dell look very interesting, only the Battery seems to be weak.
I will call them now and ask if I could get it without the software (win7) |

| I've had a very good experience with Dell laptops and linux for the past three years. Everything works. Be sure to get the "open-source" version (with no Windows installed). When I ordered I got the battery upgrade and get about 6 hrs between recharges. |

unfortunatly I cannot get any vostro without windows.
The Latitude-series offers non windows, but it starts with 999 Euros, which is far beyond what I want to pay. |

I just checked the Dell website and "chatted" with a Dell representative. Currently ALL Dells now come with Windows pre-installed (when I purchase one of their laptops a year ago they had an "open source" option with no operating sytems pre-installed). The Dell hardware works good with linux but you have to reformat the pre-installed Windows partition first. Ubuntu and Dell collaborate to certify Dell hardware for use with Ubuntu (hence, linux). Here is a link to the Ubuntu page listing the Dell hardware that has been certified.
