Post subject: [SOLVED] Cups does not see Kyocera Mita FS-1010 printer

I have a Kyocera Mita FS-1010 printer which, to be honest, never worked really good with Linux. It got a little bit better when i connected it by USB but since about 4 weeks Cups does not show the option to install USB printers any more (see screenshot).
Any ideas? |

| Installing system-config-printer-udev might help, other than that it would be interesting to see "lsusb" and the last couple of lines (20-30) of "dmesg" if you hotplug your printer. |

system-config-printer-udev is already installed.
plugging the printer into another usb-port gives these lines with dmesg:

| O.k., so it's not a native USB printer, but a parallel (IEEE 1284) printer with a IEEE 1284 <--> adaptor. Apparently the Prolific PL2305 adaptor is detected properly, but the system doesn't see the parallel port behind it - which would coincide with http://aptosid.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=1609; the reason for this unfortunate change of behaviour is unfortunately still unknown. |

Oh, I did not see this thread though I searched the forum before.
I tried to reinstall it as a serial printer but it did not work. |

thanks slh, slam. I'm watching closely, as I'm directly interested (see slh's linkabove). In my case harware should be OK since I'm able to test and print on a mac with the very same printer/USB-parallel adapter. I guess patience is what I need.  |

The usb-parallel adapter/cable issue is a different one, the Cups team is working on it. You might also try to a) remove and re-add the printer via Cups web interface, b) test different drivers there (if offered), c) connect your printer directly to a parallel port with a standard cable.

@slam: I have been on this page. Unfortunately the link to the instructions is broken: "Printer not found We're sorry, but the printer ID you provided was not found in our database."
To your suggestions:
a. I removed the printer, I even removed cups. The problem is: I cannot re-install it as the USB-printer-option is missing. Re-installing it a serial port printer does not work.
b. -> a.
c. I do not have a parallel port on my computer |

Is parallelport the only conection option at the Printer? If it has ethernet, you can specify manual ip and gateway and use in cups manual lpd/lpr service. Another Option is a little parallel/ethernet printserver if only parallel port exists.
Never had Problems with my FS 1020, FS 1030, FS 1800+ Printers connected through Ethernet. |

A good idea to check the back of the printer as some models have both a parallel and a USB port. |

| O.k., now it becomes interesting - so the problems appear to be restricted to IEEE1284 --> USB controllers. Is this specific to "Prolific Technology Inc. - IEEE-1284 Controller" (067b:2305) or are different adaptors (or plain USB printers) affected as well? |
