I did try to print a libreoffice-calc spreadsheat. CUPS did not print this. Instead an error was reported. From the logfile /var/log/cups/error_log:
Code:

The printer is an HP laserjet 1100 connected via parallel port. I was able to export the spreadsheet to PDF and print this via okular. So generally the printer does work.
I do not know since when the problem exists. Because there were some libreoffice and cups updates the last days, it may be related to these?

Same happened here with an HP p2015d printer. I changed the driver - only the cups one is a problem.

Deleting and reinstalling the printer should help. It did here.

I have already tried to delete and reinstall the printer. This did not help.
But I always wonder which driver is used best for such a laserprinter? There are: "hplip", "hpijs", "cups", "gutenprint" IIRC |

My p2015d had three options of which only the cups one didn't work.
The two which work are :
HP LaserJet P2015 Series Postscript (recommended) (grayscale, 2-sided printing)
and
HP LaserJet p2015 Series hpijs pcl3, 3.11.7 (color, 2-sided printing) |

I did install another printer instance in cups. The old one that is using hpcups as driver does still not work. But the one that is using the hpijs driver now, does work.
I still wonder what the difference is between these drivers (in case they both work).
Greetings,

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to which driver is the best for HP printers.
hplip is often the most advanced and best performing driver for HP printers, but not always - and from time to time hplip is one step behind developments in Debian Sid and makes temporary problems.
gutenprint - in most cases - is the best choice for graphics and foto printing, but driver quality varies from model to model.
cups is the generic driver, it should be the most stable one, but also sometimes lacks features.
hpijs is a special Ghostscript driver which should be used via foomatic. Most people will not need it, but it might be a temporary solution if the top 3 fail.
As a rule of thumb, try them in the above order. Do not forget to install missing firmware if needed for your printer. And always check the Linux Printing Database before bying a printer or fiddling with different drivers.
Greetings,
Chris |
