I noticed this on planet debian:

sun-java6 packages removed soon from Debian/Ubuntu (and all other linux distros)
http://sylvestre.ledru.info/blog/sylves ... m_debian_u

reason
http://robilad.livejournal.com/90792.html

I'm not using sunjava on my aptosid, but if you do, please read and consider using OpenJDK!

No good news. I do use Sun-Java because TVBrowser does not work correctly with OpenJDK... But thanks for the warning.

Good hint, thanks for sharing it. Yes, Openjdk is the future for Debian. I really hope that this will push bug reports and development, and make "sun-java" obsolete.
Greetings,
Chris

As the request for removing sun-java packages is done, does anyone have any suggestions regarding openjdk? Are there any major changes between 6 and 7?

yes you can...I have it installed and it works. Found instructions here:

http://pkill-9.com/install-java-1-7-ubu ... edora-rpm/

Note: The instructions for Ubuntu but they are applicable to Debian too.

I also hope OpenJDK will be able to run java programs and browser applets just as well as the Sun/Oracle Java.

according to tvbrowser :
      Quote:
TV-Browser 3.0.2 needs a Java version of at least JRE 6. You can use TV-Browser with the OpenJDK, so no Oracle Java is needed.

maybe you should address any tvbrowser problems with openjdk, to them.
