Thanks to Oracle, not only is OpenSolaris now dead along with other open-source projects previously funded by Sun Microsystems now facing hardship, but the OpenOffice.org community has now decided to part ways too. The OpenOffice.org community has decided to launch The Document Foundation as a new, independent organization. The Document Foundation will now be backing "LibreOffice" as the brand rather than OpenOffice.org.

Maybe a "natural" defense mechanism against Oracle after the OpenSolaris downfall? I think it's good but I hope the project doesn't die without a major, influential corporation like SUN or Oracle supporting it, let's hope Canonical contributes with more than just deb packages
Does anybody know if the transition packages will be avaialable soon? |

Debian survives without a company in the background for quite a while now
Some big companies have promised to support the new office as they did before and as they do it for example for debian, too. Canonical is by far not the only company interested in opensource.
The packages in debian are as far as i know already based on a fork go-ooo -- and the new office promised to merge the patches from them, so LibreOffice is not just another fork but tries to merge all forks which happened just because the involved company didn't liked the direction… So yes, i think we will soon see LibreOffice in the archive… |

if oracle decides not to play nice with Foss, then they'll be the ones suffering in the end. I for one look forward to LibreOffice taking up residence in the archive (and on my pc) |

I downloaded & installed LibreOffice on workplace's Window PC.
When I started one of applications, first it says JRE is required.
Then, I found OpenJDK is not availlable on Windows, and only JRE
I found I could install was from Oracle...
..so anyway for now, it won't go without Oracle's support. (in Win world) |

Didn't see that page I really hope they won't let OpenOffice die! Though, I would like to see a fresh new User Interface in a near future... |

just a quick look from beta2, just for kde releated changes, changelog:
Code:
+ use a KDE4-specific library in the configure check that's not too new [Luboš Luňák]
+ use $QTDIR and $KDEDIR for looking for Qt4/KDE4 too [Luboš Luňák]
+ build KDE4 backend module also when not building for KDE3 [Luboš Luňák]
+ KDE4 border frame width (i#111464) [Kendy]
+ separate file list for KDE3 and KDE4 stuff [Miklos, Petr]
sounds nice...does anyone tried it? |

Thanks for that info, devil!
Did you try it out?
I feel somewhat insecure here, having read about instabilities and major bugs across the internet.
Do you want to come up with any recommendations, such as "you better wait" or "keep going with that latest sht"? |
