Newly installed 64 bit aptosid, packagesearch is empty.
Tried apt-file update to no effect. Works fine on 32 bit.

apt-file is useless in this scenario, you need 'apt-get update'.

i have installed just now on amd64 in a complete uptodate system.
it has complained about some update-apt-xapian-index file not being present asked to build it and after build it worked fine.

so i guess you probably are missing some package needed by it


(time to get rid of it again...)

Issue resolved - update-apt-xapian-index worked.
