Code:

OK, I renamed the .KDE folder under my user in home. The desktop comes up.
I lost all my settings, but at least I'm up. Must have been some plasma setting, widget, theme or something, I wish I knew, so I could just rename/change that setting and not lose all my settings.
I'll set things up the way I want one thing at a time and see what happens. |

Possibly related, while trying to change settings for my ALPS touchpad in system settings, System Settings seg-faults and closes. Package kde-config-touchpad seems to be the culprit. I had some custom settings for my touchpad before the crashing problem. |

A slightly less drastic approach is to remove plasm* from the .kde/config folder.
Edit: at some point in the past (months, not weeks), a DU brought an Activity Icon to my 64 bit panel, but not to my 32 bit panel. After I logged out and back in, I notice that the 32 bit panel now has that icon as well. If plasmoids in general were causing the problem, people would be screaming everywhere. I suspect some few of us had a configuration that just now combined with a DU to bite us. |

For me was "enough" to remove gmail plasma plugin, inside plasma-desktop-appletsrc .
"Enough" because I spent 1hour+ to find out which was the guilty inside the full file

Plasma-widget-cwp is bugged for me as the panel crashes when trying to fix the weather settings as the weather widget is blank |

Veromix doesnt' work anymore for me and when I try to reload it plasma-desktop crashes again but restarts immediately this time, with full usable KDE. |
