Dear all,

I have a NetGear, Inc. WNA1100 Wireless-N 150 [Atheros AR9271] wifi
adapter. It works flawlessly with kernels 3.3 (with firmware-atheros
installed), but not with kernel(s) 3.4.

I can see it with lsusb, the modules (ath, ath9k_hw, ath9k_common,
ath9k_htc) all load, iwconfig and ifconfig see wlan0 (as wireless),
but I cannot connect. It makes attempts to get an IP, but fails
without connecting. (I'm using ceni.)

I'm running 3.3 now, but here is the system info:

I cannot find any information on this. Is there anyone with the same chipset who does NOT have this problem? Is there anything I can do to help find out what is going on?

Please install iw and crda, both are needed for modern wlan cards; e.g. in contrast to the deprecated iwconfig, iw can display if the router offers HT. My first suspicion would hint at the regulatory compliance arena (assuming you're using HT40+), also because because you're receiving an US country IE.

An interesting test would be to (temporarily) switch the router's wlan channel to 6.

OK, maybe not all is well with the fixed IP (or maybe is totally unrelated), but I cannot access my samba shares on the computer with the problem above...

UPDATE: With 3.4, not I cannot even SSH the machine (so, not a Samba problem). With the same configuration (fixed IP and all) I can SSH and access Samba shares with kernel 3.3.

Please check "/sbin/ifconfig wlan0" for dropped packages, especially DHCP problems are often caused by these. If you can, trying to change your router's working channel might already help. Another potential reason might be the rate selection algorithm messing up, please also check "iw dev wlan0 link" and "iw dev wlan0 station dump", while you're (trying) to transmit some data (at least ping your router). I suggest to compare the values between kernel 3.3 and 3.4.
