I have following problem the past year, since I installed aptosid in a new PC at work.

Every now and then X freezes - I can only move the mouse cursor but can do nothing else. I can ssh into the pc and reboot it. The freeze can happen some minutes after I switch on the PC but it can also happen after a couple of days of continuous smooth operation.

I checked Xorg.log and found following:

      Code:

I have an nvidia card and am using the binary drivers.

Do you have any idea what is going wrong and what can be done about that?

I googled the problem but got really more confused than enlightened.. Crying or Very sad

Thanks a lot in advance..

First of all, thank you for the interest.

The nvidia card is GeForce GTX550Ti

      Code:

lspci
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTX 550 Ti] (rev a1)

I installed the driver according to http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Use_DKMS

      Code:
Use DKMS

This is the easiest method and recommended unless you have some reason to not want to install a compiler.

All you need to do is install the kernel headers package for the Linux image that you're running (usually named linux-headers-<version> where <version> is whatever version of kernel you're running) and then install nvidia-kernel-dkms or the nvidia-kernel-legacy-...-dkms package for the legacy version of the drivers that you need.

DKMS will take care of the build and install process automatically.

Your system is up to date?

dpkg -l | grep nvidia
dpkg -l | grep xserver
uname -a

I usually dist-upgrade it every 5-7 days. Always the way described in the aptosid manual.

Does
      Code:
dmesg | egrep -i "dmar|iommu"

show anything?

Whenever the next freeze happens, I' ll input that - and post the output.
