So, I take it that with an older kernel it still works fine?
In the meantime 3.10-4 is out, does it crash with this one as well? (The patch names don't suggest that something would change, but I am not a kernel hacker…)

If not, you can look into /var/log/apt/history.log to find out what else got upgraded beside the kernel. And also look for any removes, usually these crashes are either mixed versions or something got removed which really shouldn't be allowed to be removed.

plasma still aborts

that's in kern.log
Aug 9 22:39:08 Cucumber10 kernel: [ 70.351604] traps: plasma-desktop[4835] general protection ip:7faa5115b463 sp:7fff2cd35c78 error:0 in libQtCore.so.4.8.5[7faa510c5000+2d500

until now; no idea -no support - no operational system
my very last attempt will be:
-install aptosid full
-d-u the fresh installation
enjoy it or give up, release all aptosid partition and swap finally to OPENSUSE (which is operational & stable all the time without any prob)
cheers

What happens if you reload plasma

      Code:
kquitapp plasma-desktop
plasma-desktop

You can also try this

      Code:
kquitapp plasma
rm -rf $KDEHOME/share/config/plasm*
plasma &

will fix most plasma-related problems (such as "zombie" icons, unremovable widgets, messed up panels etc.)

Warning! The second command will erase all your plasma settings and restore your desktop (including panels) to default.

Haven't been around, been in europe for 3 weeks

so first hint:

kquitapp plasma-desktop
results:
kquitapp(4009): "Die Anwendung „plasma-desktop“ kann nicht über den Dienst „org.kde.plasma-desktop“ und den Pfad „/MainApplication“ gefunden werden."
(which might be feasable because plasma aborts)

plasma-desktop
results:
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
plasma-desktop(4015): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "/usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: No protocol specified
Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.
"

plasma-desktop(4014): KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly

2nd hint:
kquitapp plasma
results:
kquitapp(4024): "Die Anwendung „plasma“ kann nicht über den Dienst „org.kde.plasma“ und den Pfad „/MainApplication“ gefunden werden."

rm -rf $KDEHOME/share/config/plasm*

plasma &
results:
[1] 4036
nb@cucumber10:~$ bash: plasma: Kommando nicht gefunden.

[1]+ Exit 127 plasma

guess it should be
plasma-desktop &
results:
Ausführbare Datei: plasma-desktop PID: 4060 Signal: Segmentation fault (11)
