...well: in a linux-forum (can't find the text now...)
i read: the new "xserver-xorg-video-radeon"... can't handle more than 512MB or so.. for shared memory...X1200... RS690...in the 2014 Version...
...it is a radeon prob.
temp.workaround: reduce the memory of the machine ...
so i also reduced my memory 3GB to 2 and 1GB...for a stable-aptosid.
Test is running ...
(thanks DonKult for encouragement ) |

Mhh, if that is really working with less RAM in the machine: There should be options in BIOS or kernel or both to limit the amount of RAM assigned to the graphic card. By default this is usually a small table ala 1GB=128MB, 2GB=256MB, …
(I at least think I have seen such a BIOS option once somewhere) so that you don't have to limit yourself to less RAM.
That said, that doesn't really sound very sane either. I really wonder what is up with your machine & radeon. |

Well: ...since february 14.th my aptosid was running with above "radeon.pm=0" ...
( i always made daily d-u )
but yesterday and this day with newest d-u:
crash !
so i decided:
apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-radeon
infobash -v
Host/Kernel/OS "aptosidbox" running Linux 3.13-6.slh.1-aptosid-686 i686 [ aptosid 2011-01 Γῆρας - kde-lite - (201102051540) ]
CPU Info 2x AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3600+ clocked at [ 1000.000 MHz ]
Videocard Advanced Micro Devices, [AMD/ATI] RS690 [Radeon X1200] X.Org 1.15.0 [ 1280x1024@0.0hz ]
Processes 123 | Uptime 1min | Memory 230.1/2914.4MB | HDD Size 160GB (80%used) | GLX Renderer Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits) | GLX Version Yes | Client Shell | Infobash v3.46
apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-radeon
xserver-xorg-video-radeon:
Installiert: (keine)
Installationskandidat: 1:7.3.0-1+b1
...
find /dev -group video
/dev/radio0
/dev/vbi0
/dev/video0
/dev/fb0
/dev/dri/card0
/dev/dri/controlD64
root@aptosidbox:/home/linux# glxinfo | grep -i vendor
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
i do not really need radeon - kopfschüttel ?? |

this day
new crash:
on my dual-boot-system:
aptosid
siduction
win-XP
i run d-u in aptosid yesterday (init 3), reboot, start aptosid, 12 min.later: crash.
found out: BIOS: a) AHCI = crash b) ide-legacy = no crash
crash means: aptosid: radeon error messages - suddenly black screen - later a fixed screen with "kernel-panic try fix it" etc
( i only made a handmade digital-photo ...) no dmesg available after reboot. |
