15 Post subject: (solved) Firestarter fails to start  PostPosted: 04.12.2010, 21:24

My OS kernel version is 2.6.35-7.slh.1-aptosid-686

Yesterday something I installed changed a config file so that now Firestrter will not start. I used apt-get purge to get rid of it and then apt-get install to re-install Firestarterr. I, as root, ran Firestarter in konsole. The last lines I see are:

Setting up firestarter (1.0.3-Cool ...
update-rc.d: warning: firestarter start runlevel arguments (S) do not match LSB
Default-Start values (2 3 4 5)
update-rc.d: warning: firestarter stop runlevel arguments (none) do not match LSB Default-Stop values (0 1 6)

When I looked where my system has Firestarter and update-rc.d, I found these:

- from /var/lib/update-rc.d :

update-rc.d firestarter start 65 S .

- from /usr/share/sysvinit :

#! /bin/sh
#
# update-rc.d
#
# Dummy update-rc.d, installed when file-rc replaces
# sysv-rc or the other way around. The postrm of the
# package being replaced symlinks /usr/sbin/update-rc.d
# to this dummy file.
#
# All this script does is "scream and die".
#

name=`basename $0`

cat <<EOF>&2

$name: not present yet.

You are replacing sysv-rc with file-rc or another -rc package, or
the other way around. The replacement package must first be
unpacked before you can configure other packages.

Exiting with error status 1.

EOF

exit 1

.................

Tell me if the above info is not useful to help me. Perhaps some other file would be more useful to you-- tell me.

What do I edit to fix this problem so that Firestarter starts up again?

[My OS kernel version is 2.6.35-7.slh.1-aptosid-686]

Thanks

Thanks devil for your interest. I didn't have to run apt-get -f install

After I re-installed Firestarter, I rebooted my computer and of course was greeted by the initiation of Firestarter gui box, as if I never had Firestarter in my system. So all seems to be OK again-- Firestarter is again running.

Thanks
