I have a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1900 USB DVB-T that worked with kernels prior the 2.6.36 series, but since the V4L in-tree version didn't work for my hardware, I've been building the kernel modules myself following this guide:
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_Obtain,_Build_and_Install_V4L-DVB_Device_Drivers
and pulling the source using Mercurial.

But since the new 2.6.36 stable kernel release the build process stops with errors (due to an I2C driver code rewrite?), so i tried using the in-tree driver.

Plugging the device in and looking at /var/log/messages everything seems to load correctly, modules & firmware. Only thing is after starting Kaffeine and selecting Digital TV
after a while I get the message:

    Read error from:
    <blank>

Any ideas?

I am not sure if that card will work with kaffeine, I know it won't with tvtime, however, it should work fine with mythtv or freevo.

tv-viewer ( http://tv-viewer.sourceforge.net/mediaw ... /Main_Page ) might also be an option

I am in a similar situation. I have a tuner that is not properly supported in the current v4l-dvb modules, so I have to get the source, fix my modules then build.

I was unable to build it for the 2.6.36 kernel. I googled around a bit and found that the current v4l-dvb source does not build against any 2.6.36 kernel.

I went back to the aptosid 2.6.35 kernel and had no problems building against that.

My plan is to stick with 2.6.35 and try again with 2.6.37 and see if they have fixed it then.
