Hi all,

Has anyone used swiftfox before? It is better than iceweasel and it is safe to install it in aptosid? Thank you.

JB

No one needs swiftfox, it's snakeoil and brings nothing.
It's also not in debian, so the question about this software is useless.

I've used Swiftfox in the past, and still have it installed on one of my machines.

Honestly, I see no difference at all in it's performance from that of Iceweasel or from the Firefox binary from Mozilla... and that's on fairly recent as well as some very old hardware.

And considering that historically the Swiftfox developer has sometimes been slow to issue upgrades, and keeps his "code optimizations" secret, I see no reason to use it.

May I ask the reason for your interest in swiftfox?

Could it be that the version of iceweasel, (3.5.16-4), currently available in sid is a little dated, by comparison?

If so you could install version 3.6.13-1 from the Debian experimental repos.

Alternatively you could get iceweasel 4.0 beta from the link below.

http://mozilla.debian.net/packages/

Installer beware! As both these options are from 'outside' sid support may not be forthcoming should any problems arise.

Cheers.

The 3.6 versions in experimental haven't given my any grief. I subscribe to the package to find out about updates.

I also use daily builds of firefox 4 (native install) to check it out. (I've given it its own profile called beta and I start it with the following script

      Code:

/home/tim/bin/firefox/firefox -P beta -no-remote

which lets me run both iceweasel 3.6 and firefox 4 beta at the same time (the magic -no-remote startup option)
firefox 4 is pretty good. Fast, and highly stable. Biggest problem is not all extensions are ready yet.

I run iceweasel 4.0 Beta 8, no problems at all. As Tim mentioned it is both fast and stable.

With regard to extensions, you could try the following trick mentioned in the link below.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2010/07/14/how-to-install-or-force-enable-incompatible-add-ons-in-firefox-4-beta/

All of the extensions that I usually run with iceweasel, work fine, including those purportedly 'incompatible'.

No doubt there will be some that won't work.

Cheers.
