I'm having various problems with the i915 graphics.
Various freezes and black screens when using multiple monitors.
There seem to be various discussions on the web about this.
Is there anything I can do in aptosid to make things work?

i3 chip here with Intel graphics. Only issue is on occasion that, randomly, a small piece of a window decoration or border may disappear until I move the window.

HeSaid,
I have problems when using more than 1 monitor. Since I have to make many presentations, this is a big problem for me. Are you also using multiple monitors? |

ubuntu thread of your link suggests the solution at the end...
(compiling dmr-intel-next kernel with a patch)
otherwise, how about trying old sidux kernel?
(Debian does not have much report about this bug, because Debian has older kernel? |

muchan,
Thank you for your reply. I do not have the technical ability to compile the dmr-intel-next kernel with a patch. Is this relatively easy?
I do not have access to an old sidux kernel that would work. Should I try the Debian kernel? |

compiling kernel is easy for people who have already done it.
relatively not so easy for the first time, or like me, who didn't since long time.
and you would need to learn to use git, to compile -next thingy, so it's not relatively easy. 8(
Don't you have any old sidux installation? if there is one, probably you have .deb packages
for kernel in /var/apt/archive. you can install with dpkg -i <packagename>.
If really no old sidux kernel is accessible, you can try with debian kernel for (testing for) the presentation...
anyway, if it is regression of current kernel, probably in some weeks, corrected version of kernel will be out... (either slh will pic a patch, or -next thingy goes into 2.6.36 or 2.6.37...)
until then, you can boot in old kernel, whenever you need multi monitor presentation... |

I have used an external monitor (large screen LCD TV) for presentations only a few times and they worked well on 32-bit sidux with Svideo-out and analog audio.
The only problem I had was with audio when using HDMI cable, but that's another matter.

muchan and HeSaid,
Thank you both. I'll try the debian kernel and also wait for a newer kernel. |
