from the 2.6.37-0.slh.19 on, aptosid kernel has nouveau support.
from the changelog
      Quote:

* update kernel config:
- enable DRM_NOUVEAU && DRM_NOUVEAU_BACKLIGHT
while this is not a sane direction as long as it has an unstable
userspace ABI, Debian/ XSF (#612189) forces us to enable nouveau.
Happy breakage for 2.6.38, 2.6.39, 2.6.40, ..., ∞.

So, now we have one more option.

haha, that German sarcasm shines through in slh's comment Smile

As the nouveau driver is under heavy development, it won't stabilize for a good while but it is basically in a usable state like what the radeon driver was in last year.

nouveau itself might do what its supposed to. its ABI will break though on any kernel upgrade for a good while.

True, thus the nouveau devs would be playing catch-up whenever there's a new kernel release

It does this only when a new kernel is installed. In case it does it every time you boot then there must be something wrong (I'm using the binary driver myself).

Maybe he only reboots when he installed a new kernel, hence doing it every time he boots.

As most people with Nvidia cards are probably not aware, the new free and open source driver Nouveau is already enabled in Aptosid kernels, and does work well for most cards and use cases. So, it's time to finally get rid of the closed source malware, and potentially problematic 3rd party repositories. Here is how to do that:

In KDE System Settings turn all desktop effects off. Remove all 3rd party repositories from /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Remove all traces of nvidia in: /etc/default/dmakms, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and /usr/src/.

      Code:
init 3
apt-get purge ^nvidia* ^libnividia* xserver-xorg-video-nv
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Reboot. You are using the free open source Nouveau driver now. Please post any issues you might have with this HowTo.

Greetings,
Chris

For me, it's very good to have alternative solution when "one and the only solution" might fail.
So I personally very appreciate the towo's support with his repository.
