Dear all,

The instructions to install noveau include purging the nvidia driver. Is it possible to have them both installed and just switch which one is used in a file in xorg.conf.d?

This way one can try the noveau and still have the nvidia ready when needed. (I'd like that...)

Thanks,

Luis

I know what you're getting at.

In my dim dark pre sidux/aptosid days, (shudders at the thought), it was handy to be able to 'switch back' to the nv drivers when the proprietary nvidia drivers went belly up.

All it took was 1. fire up a trusty text editor; 2. change the line Driver "nv...." to Driver "nv" in xorg.conf and 3. Restart X to be on your merry way again.

I don't suppose that you've got a spare system lying around with an nvidia card that you can play with and break?

Cheers.

xserver-xorg-video-nv is gone for ever.
nouveau needs a loaded nouveau-kernel-module.
if this module is loaded, the propritäry driver can't work.
besides this all, the propritäry nvidia-driver overwrites some system-libs from xserver.

@towo, is it possible to reinstall the X packages after removing the nvidia driver cruft then set up nouveau?

if so, what packages would need reinstallation to restore the original X libs that got overwritten by the proprietary nvidia driver? Something like this should be in the wiki

Thanks towo!

I think this should also work for those who use the *cough* fglrx *cough* driver too for those who want to switch to the radeon driver in that case
