It,s my first time posting on a forum,so please bear with me.
First,hi. i.m running aptosid 2011-xfce-amd64. The problem is with skype. The damn thing isn.t working,to be exact, the microphone and the webcam isn.t working.
I,ve installed skype from their website, debian version.
I have a pixart imaging chip, well recognized by the sistem,it is a spc 220n webcam, and a generic mike. I,ve done all the things i could think about :raise all alsamixer controls ,install pavucontrol and activate just a channel out of two, unmute all, etc.
When i start skype with LD_preload..., command ,i have video, but no audio. I can.t voice chat with others.
Please help.

If Skype it,s a no go for aptosid, what alternatives are ? for a a/v chat on linux, but a app that has also windows port or something (i have friends that are stick to windoze). any help is apreciated, because i like aptosid, don.t wanna go back to windoze Smile

Hi you will have to do
apt-get install pulseaudio
to make skype work in aptosid and then reboot, this usually makes it work, if you uninstall pulseaudio, you will have to configure the mixer settings, which can be a bit hit and miss.
however uninstalled pulseaudio still has done something under the hood to sound, and Skype can be made to work with the right settings for your machine. The mic sound can still be less than optimal however.

One does not need pulseaudio, only a ~/.asoundrc like it's written here.

You need to set "hw:0.0" to your soundcard if it is not "hw:0.0".

It works flawlessly here.

To add to what has already been said, any time you have a problem with audio, open up the entire mixer and make sure of EVERY setting. I have to use the mic. boost for a good talk level. I do not have pulse audio installed and the latest Skype worked out of the box on my 32 bit.

it worked ! althought i really don,t know how.. Confused I,ve installed the static version of skype, and followed ''The microphone does not work'' chapter of the page that you provided me, hubi. It seems that you have to set the ''capture'' in alsamixer to your mic,in my case ''rear mic'',and activate right and left channel with spacebar.
Anyway, thanks all of you.
