Post subject: Problems with Intel-graphics/driver (again) after d-u  PostPosted: 26.01.2011, 09:46

Hi there,
today's dist-upgrade gave me kernel 2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-686 on my laptop (HP/Compaq nx9020), which is --I have to admit it-- a bit outdated, but still my main PC.
I have been having problems with the intel driver for the built-in graphics since long ago.
There were Linux kernels, where everything worked fine, even with UXA acceleration, but for almost all aptosid kernels I had to disable UXA in the xorg.conf (because the laptop completely froze from time to time), and there were kernel versions, where I had to use the vesa driver instead, because the intel driver simply did not work. Confused
Interesting, for most kernel versions where the intel driver was functioning, the vesa driver was not, and vice versa.
With 2.6.37-0.slh.7-aptosid-686, the intel-driver works for me (without UXA).
Since today, i.e. with 2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-686, neither intel nor vesa drivers do their job.
vesa: I get the error message "no screens found".
intel: The X11 start-up gets stuck at a very early stage (when using startx from runlevel 3, the console contents gets hidden, but I can still see a console-cursor on top-left of the screen, and that's all. No point of return from there, no reaction to any keys pressed, I have to login via ssh from elsewhere to reboot).
Any ideas what I can do (except using the older kernel and hoping for new ones with better intel graphics support)?
As I said above: This is not a new problem, it is some kind of "works/doesn't work" since long ago!

My xorg.conf:
      Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
        Option      "DontZap" "off"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Card0"
        Driver          "intel"
#        Driver         "vesa"
        VendorName      "Intel Corporation"
        BoardName       "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)"
EndSection

Of course, since kernel 2.6.37-0.slh.7-aptosid-686 works for me, this is not an urgent problem, but I am simply afraid, that the situation might become worse and worse in the future, until I can no more use my laptop with Linux...!?
Thanks for any ideas/suggestions!

Without a further look to /var/log/Xorg.0.log no one can say anything, i think.

OK, thanks!
Well, to be more precise: With the intel-driver and the latest kernel 2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-686, I can see in the process list that the X server seems to come up (including window manager etc) after a while! Nevertheless, the screen stays dark (except for the underscore/cursor on top-left).

If you want to use vesa, you have to add i915.modeset=0 as bootcheat.

Can you show, what

dmesg | grep -i i915

sayes?

Hey, thanks, that was a good tip! Smile

I remember that I once had the i915.modeset=0 kernel parameter, but I simply forgot to re-add it after the migration to grub2... Embarassed

In particular: Without i915.modeset=0, dmesg|grep i915 gives:
      Code:
[    4.300297] i915 0000:00:02.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKA] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
[    4.300305] i915 0000:00:02.0: setting latency timer to 64
[    4.804139] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

After a reboot with the i915.modeset=0, the framebufferconsole (invoked with gfxpayload=1024x768x16) does not work anymore, but X11 with vesa driver works. OK, I can live with that Smile
Then dmesg|grep i915 gives:
      Code:
[    0.000000] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-686 root=UUID=a5fce4e9-3d2c-44e3-a3b4-700e318a9b95 ro quiet gfxpayload=1024x768x16 resume=/dev/sda3 3 i915.modeset=0
[    3.696231] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
[    3.720554] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.1 on minor 1

gfxpayload=1024x768x16 is not a valid boot-cheat!
If you want a Vesa-Framebuffer, put the following in /etc/default/grub

      Code:

GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768

After that, do update-grub.

Thanks!
I corrected the kernel parameters and corrected/modified grub configuration.
The result is interesting: I get a framebuffer console, but with a green font colour.

X11 with vesa driver works (with i915.modeset=0), but X11 with intel driver does not work.

Interesting: With i915.modeset=0, the intel driver issues a "No screens found" error, and this is also true of the 2.6.37-0.slh.7-aptosid-686 kernel, where the intel driver works without this setting...

Without i915.modeset=0, the intel driver on 2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-686 behaves like described above (=black screen, no reaction to keyboard), whereas with i915.modeset=0, the intel driver reports this "no screens found" with the following Xorg.0.log:

xserver-xorg-video-intel does not work without kms, so with modeset=0 you can't use the intel x-driver.
I would install xserver-xorg-video-intel, mesa and libdrm-intel1 from experimental, remove the modeset-line and give it a try.

Thanks for all these answers+tips so far!
However, installing the mentioned packages from experimental did not help much. At least one improvement, as far as I can tell: Although the screen still stays dark (with the intel driver) and still "a hung GPU" is reported (see Xorg.0.log in earlier post), the system now seems to reliably react to keys pressed: I can press ctrl+alt+F1 to switch back to the console and kill the startx command (which worked well today with the latest 2.6.37-0.slh.11-aptosid-686 from today's d-u). Yesterday with 2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-686, however, killing the X11-related process(es) made the system hang again (although the magic "reisub" keys worked for an emergency reboot). (This freezing thing might be bad luck, though, of course I cannot claim that this is a definite difference in the kernel versions.)

hallo,
the same problem here.
the 2.6.37-0.slh.7-aptosid-686 as well as the 2.6.37-0.slh.1-aptosid-686 are booting, all other newer ones (the slh-9 and slh-12) are not.

when the screen gets black, the time x should be started, i am able to ctrl+alt+f1 to another terminal and to look into dmesg, but i have no idea how to see this message when i reboot into a kernel which will boot to the end.

in /var/log/syslog i can see this:

/usr/sbin/gpm[1689]: *** info [daemon/startup.c(131)]:
Jan 28 09:45:47 murija5 /usr/sbin/gpm[1689]: Started gpm successfully. Entered daemon mode.
Jan 28 09:45:49 murija5 kernel: [ 22.368144] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Jan 28 09:45:49 murija5 kernel: [ 22.370895] [drm:i915_reset] *ERROR* Failed to reset chip.

i am just realizing that this is the same what i can see in dmesg.

cheers,
doc

Thanks a lot, now I know that I'm not alone (i.e. this is not specific to my hardware)!
And: Checking dmesg is a very good idea!
What I found for my laptop:

kernel version 2.6.37-0.slh.7-aptosid-686 (where X11 with intel driver works):
      Code:
[    3.638708] i915 0000:00:02.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKA] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
[    3.638717] i915 0000:00:02.0: setting latency timer to 64

kernel version 2.6.37-0.slh.12-aptosid-686 (where X11 with intel driver does not work):
      Code:
[    3.913408] i915 0000:00:02.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKA] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
[    3.913418] i915 0000:00:02.0: setting latency timer to 64
[    5.096268] i915 0000:00:02.1: setting latency timer to 64
[    5.119805] i915 0000:00:02.1: BAR 6: can't assign [??? 0x00000000 flags 0x0] (bogus alignment)

A quick Google search for i915 BAR 6: can't assign (bogus alignment) gave several results, and the first one already looks interesting (although posted for a 2.6.35 kernel): http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/rNRcWHgkpTp2Ayfjy7is

But I must admit that this "looks interesting" is not meant to be a skilled conclusion, as my kernel hacking knowledge is almost void.
Anyone else, who might be able to help?

Looks like the problem is solved with the latest series of kernels (2.6.37-2.slh.*-aptosid-686).
Many thanks to the developers! Smile
