After my upgrade to aptosid from sidux (i got internet just today) I started the system with the new kernel but found this nasty surprise when starting KDE:

As far as I know sidux->aptosid upgrade was only supported until aptosid 2010-02 keres. You might have to reinstall.

I did a dist-upgrade, I installed aptosid-keyrings, I installed all *aptosid* and purged all *sidux* packages.
Did the same on my laptop and worked seamlessly.

Just to give a source in support of Ilinsekt's post:
      Quote:
from Release Notes: aptosid 2010-03
Contributed by slh on Dec 27, 2010 - 01:16 AM
Due to large namespace overlaps after renaming to aptosid and upcoming packaging changes in Debian, initial crossgrade support can only be provided until the end of the year (2010-12-31). Already crossgraded, existing, installations continue to be supported, but the initial crossgrade path, as announced in the aptosid 2010-02 "Κῆρες" release notes, is limited to 2010. Starting with 2011, installations preceeding aptosid 2010-02 "Κῆρες", which have never been upgraded between September 2010 and December 31st, cannot be crossgraded– and won't be supported anymore; a clean installation of a current aptosid release is recommended in these cases.

As to why the upgrade worked on the laptop.... Luck?

Since 2011-01-21, initial cross grades are no longer possible - so you're not running a supported system. While it's unlikely to be the reason for this particular issue, there is nothing we could do about this system.

I'm sorry, I didn't read release notes... Embarassed

However I think that the problem would be the same in a clean installation because the system works with 2.6.33-1...

Can somebody point me at a simple howto on how to do a clean install while keeping manually installed packages ?

You can use

      Code:

# dpkg --get-selections > dpkg-selections

Save the file "dpkg-selections" on a safe place (which won't be lost in the formating) and then copy it to your new sytstem and do

      Code:

# dpkg --set-selections < dpkg-selections
# apt-get dselect-upgrade

(Source: http://linux.togaware.com/survivor/Synchronising_Two.html)

This should synchronize the installed packages. Don't forget to backup your /home and /etc.

HTH,

Luis

      Code:
dpkg -l|awk '/^ii/{ print $2 }'|grep -v -e ^lib -e -dev -e linux-image -e linux-headers >apps_installed.txt

That way you will not include depending libraries and kernel, which might be different on the new system.
Keep the file apps_installed.tyt with your backups. On the new system do:
      Code:
apt-get install $(<apps_installed.txt)

After that your new system will have exactly the same applications installed you had before.
Greetings,
Chris
