When I try to run packagesearch, I get the foll0wing:

packagesearch:
An error occurred trying to open the xapian database at /var/lib/apt-xapian-index/index please make sure the file is readable and valid. You may try to run update-apt-xapian-index to fix this problem. The orginal error message was: "Couldn't stat '/var/lib/apt-xapian-index/index'"
Would you like to run update-apt-xapian-index now? YES Otherwise packagesearch will be terminated.

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/sbin/update-apt-xapian-index", line 97, in <module>
if not indexer.setupIndexing(force=opts.force):

cPickle.UnpicklingError: unpickling stack underflow

Execution failed.
Press enter to close the terminal emulator

packagesearch:
Installed: 2.6+b1
Candidate: 2.6+b1
Version table:
*** 2.6+b1 0
500 http://cdn.debian.net/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages
500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I find the package very useful.
Any help or comments will be appreciated,

sorry, i have no idea what's wrong with your packagesearch, but why not use `apt-cache search`?

Thank you for your reply.

P.S. How do you enable code in the replies

Ran:apt-get update && apt-get purge packagesearch && apt-get install packagesearch

Received similar error message.

Ran:

apt-get --purge remove apt-xapian-index

apt-get install packagesearch

E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

This is probably the key to the problem but I am out of my depth here.

/var in /dev/sda9

ran; /sbin/fsck -y -v /dev/sda9 (init 1) recovering journal
(couldn't umount in init3—device busy--/tmp file filled?))

maybe the file system, which has /var is full. (probably '/' disk)
check with "df" or "df -h"

check with "df" or "df -h"

After running fsck it is only 15% used.

Thank you for the reply.

Received the same message when trying to DU:

W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

The partition reverts to read only status

I installed from the final aptosid 2011-01 "Γῆρας" release and after 2 0r 3 Du the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver wasn't installed.
After installation, problem solved.

Gentlemen, thank you for your comments and terrific efforts.

Ust the box below the icons labelled "Code". Click it prior to typing or pasting what you want to appear in the code box
      Code:
and then click again when you are finished

You can also put the tags in manually, of course.
