My Nikon PTP camera was always showing up in KDE's Device Notifier plasma widget since I bought it last August, until recently. Now, it doesn't get picked up by Notifier, but it still shows up in dmesg and it's still accessible in Digikam. This Coolpix S8000 camera has no USB mass storage mode, only PTP. Other devices are showing up in Device Notifier, such as card readers, music players and usb keys. I have the same problem in 3 recent kernels, up to 2.6.37-3 and it's also no different in a newly created test user. I'm running the latest KDE 4.4.5 version from Sid and Device Notifier version 1.0. Any ideas?

This seems to be affecting all cameras in PTP mode. I have another camera, a Sony DSC-P7, that has both PTP and USB mass storage modes. In USB mass storage mode, it's detected by Device Notifier, but in PTP mode, it's not, while it's still detected by the sub-system and gphoto2 and accessible from digikam.
      Code:
[24815.664028] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
[24815.853249] usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=054c, idProduct=004e
[24815.853258] usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[24815.853263] usb 2-2: Product: Sony PTP
[24815.853268] usb 2-2: Manufacturer: Sony

$ gphoto2 --auto-detect
Model                          Port
----------------------------------------------------------
Sony DSC-F707V (PTP mode)      usb:002,006

$ lsusb -s 002:006
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 054c:004e Sony Corp. DSC-xxx (ptp)

Does anyone have a camera that's picked up by Device Notifier in PTP mode? I read that in KDE 4.6, which I'm not yet using, Hal is deprecated in favor of udev. I wonder if that could be the cause of this issue in KDE 4.4.5-8. I haven't seen anyone else post a similar issue, it seems to be quite new.

Not sure if this is your problem but after a recent update devices are no longer automatically mounted. If you go into system settings -advanced - removable devices you can enable auto mounting again.

I've played with the Removable Device settings and also with the Device Notifier settings, but they don't appear to have any effect on this issue, PTP cameras still aren't picked up by Notifier. I also installed the kamera package, which allows the files on PTP cameras to be accessed in KDE apps such as Dolphin and Konqueror by typing camera:/, besides accessing them in programs like Digikam as I had been doing. But these cameras still don't show up in Device Notifier any more, which was my previous way of accessing them. Not a big practical issue, but still a significant change of behavior of the notifier.

At some point in recent months, Device Notifier starting picking up this Nikon PTP camera again, however it does not seem to do it 100% reliably, e.g. sometimes you have to turn the camera off and back on. Also, when you have two simultaneous user logins, it picks up the camera on whichever login is active when the camera is first plugged in, but then it never picks it up on the other login for that session. Anybody know a workaround for that? In any case, the camera is always picked up by the command "gphoto2 --auto-detect" and is also always available to all users in all camera applications and by opening the URL "camera:/" in KDE, so this is a pretty minor usability issue. For example, the command "gwenview_importer camera:/" always works, Device Notifier just makes that easier to do.

The problem of Device Notifier only picking up the camera in one active login only exists with the PTP camera, not with another USB mass storage camera, which gets picked up simultaneously in both user sessions.
