Just a general query regarding the possible usage of a PCI ( NOT PCI-e to USB 3.0 card under aptosid.
I've found a possible card , a Addonics AD2U3PCI card that offers 2x USB 3.0 ports from a standard PCI slot, however the information I read on the web site only mentions MS Windows drivers so its possible that it wont work under any Linux distro anyway.
Has anybody had any experience with any brand of USB 3.0 addin cards with aptosid ( or Sidux ) ?
( Background note: I'm looking to use a USB 3.0 external HD drive for backup, OR via a eSATA card -- USB 3.0 seems the more flexible option however ) |

Shouldn't this type of addon card work with any OS that has USB 3.0 support? Linux was the first ... I only have an old PCI USB 2.0 addon card, which requires no drivers on any OS that natively supports that standard. Drivers should only be needed on OSes without native support. |

Since there are only few usb3 chipsets, the chance is high, that the card will work ootb. |

Thanks for your info, seems that aptosid is well sorted as regards USB 3.0 ! I'll report back when/if I get the aforemetioned card. |

Connecting a USB 3.0 host controllerthrough plain PCI does not really make any sense, as the 32 bit/ 33 MHz PCI bus (shared by all devices using PCI) is specified for 133 MB/s (in theory, in practice somewhere around 85-100 MB/s), while USB 3.0 tops out at >=400 MBit/s and even plain "old" USB 2.0 requires around 60 MBit/s. Connecting a USB 3.0 host controller through PCI therefore just fills up the PCI bus and affects throughput for itself and all other devices connected through PCI. Looking at the USB 2.0 controllers for sale, those tended to be of pretty bad quality/ reliabity, so while - yes, chances are okay'ish that current kernels already support those controllers, it doesn't mean that you'll actually have much fun by using it. |

Are there any PCI-e USB3 cards out there yet? |

That's a PCI card and will have serious bandwidth limitations that slh has described above, so a PCI-e card is recommended. |

If you click on the Asus PCI-e card in the Tom's Hardware link, you can see the NEC controller chip and it is the same part number as I mentioned above. |
