Hi,
Trying an Aptosid install on a box at work. It has an MSI N8400GS-D512D3H graphics card.
I know - I've looked about on the web and it seems to be a bit of a laughing stock in gfx card terms! But it's what is in the machine and I doubt the company will stump up for a tastier card...

Anyways, I have 2.6.37-0 up and running, but I am restricted to 800x600 or 640x480 screen res and that is killing my eyes. Is there anything I can do to get the card working better?

Cheers,
Rich

Excellent - thanks! I think I had covered most of these steps by looking at other posts here, but there were a few bits missing. My eyes thank you. I thank you Smile

The 8400GS is a few years old, but works well with the nvidia drivers. I have an XFX 8500GT fanless and it does movies, flash, and games at 1280x1024 at good fps, no stuttering or high temperature issues. I highly recommend using the nvidia drivers from towo's repo, have the following in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/sources.list:

      Code:

deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main non-free contrib

You can get AMD 9200 graphic cards(PCI or AGP if you have on MOBO) very cheap, thay have dedicated RAMS too.
I used one when I replaced the old 14" TFT with a 20" LCD. I had to add the card (USD 25) for resolution.
That oldie , AMD Sempron 2500+ (64-bit)has only 512 MB DDR,now it works OK, does my jobs.

Additional advantage is the you can free most (maybe all) shared Graphic memory, the machine will get more RAM.
