Q: Why get rid of '686' but keep the 'amd64' flavour?

We intend to get rid of 'amd64' too, but we need to ensure that upgrades from linux-image-2.6-amd64:i386 to linux-image-2.6-amd64:amd64 work properly.

what?

a) you can't "get rid of" amd64.

b) wtf does " but we need to ensure that upgrades from linux-image-2.6-amd64:i386 to linux-image-2.6-amd64:amd64 work properly" mean?

I guess it means switching to 64bit for 64bit systems running in 32bit mode. Maybe there isn't any reason anymore to stick to 32bit as everything works fine in 64bit.

The article linked contains a mix of opinion. estimation, some facts - and mistakes. Add that it is not relevant for Aptosid (we do our own kernels since ever, and never used Debian kernels), so feel free to simply ignore it.
Greetings,
Chris

I'm sure that most distros like Aptosid will most likely roll their own kernels to still cater to the plain -686 crowd

In our day's most pc's are cpuX64 bit so it's logical to move on. A world of only 64bit app's is not so dramatic!
