I did a dist-upgrade installing the new kernel linux-image-2.6.39-0.slh.1-aptosid-686. This kernel does not work on my system. When trying to boot the following message show up:
Code:
udevd[441]: unable to receive user udevd message: Resource temporarily unavailable
udevd[441]: unable to receive user udevd message: Resource temporarily unavailable
udevd[441]: unable to receive user udevd message: Resource temporarily unavailable
/init: line 318: Can't open /root/dev/console: no such file
...
Booting the old kernel 2.6.38-6.slh.2-aptosid-686 does work fine.
Code:
Host/Kernel/OS "oink" running Linux 2.6.38-6.slh.2-aptosid-686 i686 [ sidux 2009-04 Μόρος - kde-lite - (200912310312) ]

I just faced the same issue after upgrading a few packages.
This is not caused by the kernel. The kernel 2.6.39-0.slh.1-aptosid-686 was working fine on my system before upgrading these packages.
I suspect that the panic is being caused by udev (169-1) and/or libudev0 (169-1).
I didn't keep 2.6.38 on my system, so for now I'm using 2.6.37

Same issue as the OP, same warnings, 32 bit, booted into 2.6.37 just fine. Yes, it has been some time since my last du - 529 packages worth. This was the only issue. |

The problem is not the kernel, but udev 169-1 (uploaded to Debian/ unstable this morning) - it only manifests itself with that kernel, because 2.6.39-0.slh.1-aptosid-{686,amd64} is the most current kernel and udev rebuilds the initrd for the newest kernel while installing (initrds for older kernels aren't touched), which breaks the affected initrd. Unfortunately none of my own systems appear to be affected so far...

I got bit by the bug and was able to recover my laptop by using a chroot and downgrading to udev in Testing.
In my case I got a system panic and system locks hard..so what else would need to be fixed?
Update: I did a test on a desktop and no issues with udev 169-1 seen as I had a clean boot into init 5. I made sure I had another kernel around with an older initrd just in case of failure
The bug has to be involving kernel drivers |

2 out of 4 machines has the same problem as OP (32 bit)
my 64 box gets me to the grub rescue screen with the error
Code:
error:symbol not found:'grub_divmo64_full'
my main boxx (32bit) was not injured |

This must be quite a hard to find bug considering the varying reports. |
