You have never read the manual!
      Code:
m-a -t a-i nvidia-kernel-source -l 2.6.38-6.slh.1-aptosid-686

Then reboot to the aptosid-kernel and read the manual about dmakms.

Ok, I'm not going to waste my time here any longer, @towo you recommendations lead my nowhere so far,and by the way, if you cannot tame your impatience just get on with your life and switch your interests to something like cross-stitching or anything else of that sort , people don't come to this forum for spanking and scalding. If you are unable or unwilling to help just say so, keep your sarcastic comments for yourself.
Thank you and have a great life

Update : after being bombarded with a slew of derogatory suggestions and sarcastic comments referring to how ignorant and stupid I am and how much I lack 'the knowledge' I installed Liquorix kernel and it works perfectly with my nvidia card without any fiddling around . Way to go ! Bye bye aptosid kernel , and thank you for nothing

No one said you are ignorant or stupid, although someone did point out the obvious fact that you did not choose to read and follow the excellent guidance in the aptosid manual. If you had followed that guidance, exactly, then you would have a good working Nvidia driver installation just as I do.

Good luck with liquorix!

@dibl
spaceferret@ethernity:~$ infobash -v3
Host/Kernel/OS "ethernity" running Linux 2.6.38-6.dmz.1-liquorix-686 i686 [ sidux 2009-03 Μώμος - kde-lite - (200911110039) ]

Now,the following is an exercise in logic and common sense for a first-grader
-same computer, same nvidia package, same configuration, aptosid kernel- doesn't work
-same computer, same nvidia package, same configuration, liquorix kernel -does work, no intervention whatsoever, install, reboot -voila !
Where does the excellent guidance fits here? If you have such a profound knowledge after reading the 'excellent guidance' (which I read and re-read more than once ) can you figure it out for me and tell me where the problem is ? Otherwise all you rhetoric is useless

The ironic part of this thread is, that he was satisfied with very towo's kernel
before attempting aptosid's kernel... he could stay with frickel without needing Dementz's.

(Bye)

The may be even more ironic part:

If he had followed the advice in towos last post insteed of complaining to be threatend stupid, he could have marked this thread as solved (given the right sources were installed, which there are) and this question would have been answered too:

      Spaceferret wrote:

Exactly there where towo has pointed to:
      Quote:
... and read the manual about dmakms.

He had installed aptosid kernel 2.6.38.4... and then upgraded to 2.6.38.6... where his card didn't worked... because the necessary new module was not building.

ii nvidia-kernel-source 270.41.06-1 NVIDIA binary kernel module source

So what to do?
      towo wrote:
      Code:

Then reboot to the aptosid-kernel and read the manual about dmakms.

      manual wrote:
      Code:
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source nvidia-kernel-common dmakms

Then activate Dynamic Module-Assistant Kernel Module Support (dmakms) for nvidia, so that the next time the Linux kernel is updated a nvidia module is prepared for it too, without manual intervention. To do that, add nvidia-kernel-source to the /etc/default/dmakms configuration file:

      Code:
echo nvidia-kernel-source >> /etc/default/dmakms

Conclusion: It is allways a good idea to follow given advices carefully -after reading the fine manual.

just 2 Cent

greets

The incompetence of people who commented on this topic is simply amusing . I've been using aptosid (sidux) since 2009 successfully installing new kernel each and every time. When nvidia went cranky with the aptosid kernel I switched to towo's kernel and towo's nvidia package. After reading on the Forum that 2.6.38-6 works well with nvidia I commented out Frickelplatz and went back to aptosid kernel just to find out it doesn't work with my card.I did exactly what The Manual prescribes and still couldn't get it to load nvidia module even though the nvidia kernel module was built and placed where it's suppose to be. I have manually deleted the module, reinstall the nvidia-kernel-source nvidia-kernel-common dmakms -all with the same negative results. Anyone with even half-a-brain is capable to appreciate the fact that here we have a user who managed to run the distro since 2009 which clearly states that this person is well aware of all necessary procedures and yet there's obviously something that prevents that particular aptosid kernel version from functioning properly on this particular machine. If I wouldn't have dmakms activated I would have to compile nvidia driver with the Liquorix kernel which I didn't have to, the post-install did it for me. I'm being treated here like President Obama is treated by Republicans,no matter what he does it's all wrong Smile
