I was just noticing this:
      Code:
# apt-show-versions modconf
modconf 0.3.11 installed: No available version in archive
and was wondering if it is deprecated and safe to remove.

Did you install this from the stable repos ?

Why ?

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/modconf

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=modconf

You could try and do

      Code:
apt-get remove --purge modconf -s

to see what it wants to purge

Modconf is strongly deprecated since kernel 2.4.0, in other words for more than a decade.

Well, I can not remember ever installing it explicitly, and it removes cleanly so it's gone now

      Code:
pt-cache policy modconf
modconf:
  Installed: 0.3.11
  Candidate: 0.3.11
  Version table:
 *** 0.3.11 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

does that mean it is not on any mirror available but still installed? So it must have been on the iso?

Yes it was in the last releases iso and 0.3.11 is still in Debian stable.

It is not in sid anymore and hence won't be in 2011-02 and there should be no problems removing it.
