| Please try it without "echo -n "050d 2103" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rtl8192cu/new_id", it's not necessary with that test kernel. But like I already mentioned, I fear there are subtile differences between your device and rtl8192cu - otherwise the injection method should have worked. |

Sorry, I should have said that I also tried it without the "new_id" added.

Why not file a bug report against this driver so that this device can be included.
Does this work with ndiswrapper? if so then the device is good and then maybe needs some quirk added to the Linux rtl8192cu driver to allow it to work. Otherwise there might be some possible hardware issue with the device or a bug in the kernel |

OK, in the final test, the issue was -- PEBKAC. I had reinstalled the OS for unrelated reasons and did not think to reinstall the realtek firmware at that time. The dmesg output gives the problem -- no firmware loaded because the dumb operator didn't reinstall it. 
This problem is solved with kernel 3.0.0.slh.5.
And thank you very much for the fine support -- we now have a very nice additional wifi dongle for use with aptosid!

great to hear that you got it working...so all that was really needed was the ID to be added plus ensuring firmware gets loaded.
EDIT:
How well does this dongle work? Is it fast and stable enough to use a lot?
Also @ slh, why does the kernel crash when trying to add an ID to the /proc/bus/usb via echoing the USB ID? |

I will report back when I can answer the question. It configures nicely in ceni, but working with my home router I'm having no luck getting it to accept the WPA/2 passkey, which I can verify side-by-side with my netbook. It can also see a good signal from an unsecured wireless network, but I can't get an IP address from it -- it must be static.
EDIT: With my netbook I can get an IP address and use the neighbor's unsecured network. Also, the Belkin device reports it at -47 dBm signal strength, but my Toshiba netbook gives it -80 to -83 (which may explain why the Belkin couldn't get an IP address), so there are still some issues to sort. |

| What is the current state of your testing (close range, at least - sensitivity of different wlan cards often differs a lot and the "signal quality" readings are usually not comparable), especially in regards to WPA2 functionality? Without a positive confirmation, this USB ID won't get upstream and will have to be removed from our kernel again as well. |

I have not successfully closed the link with my router. I'm working with ceni, and also wicd, (and alternate configurations of /etc/wpa_supplicant/roam.conf), trying to figure out what is the problem with the WPA/2 passphrase/PSK. ceni appears to be configuring it correctly, until I get to the "scan" module, and it never, ever finds a ESSID or BSSID. wicd sees my network, shows a reasonable signal strength, but generates a "wrong password" message, when I'm sure the passphrase is correct. I have 2 different netbooks, both running aptosid, that connect to my router, so I have been comparing the setups to this Dell box, trying to find something different.
I'm suspecting the rtl8192cu driver, but I have no proof at this moment.
Any suggestions are welcome. |

| If you're using wpa2-psk, there's a simple way to configure it (at least for testing, please make sure that wicd can't interfere, perhaps by temporarily purging it) through /etc/network/interfaces:

| o.k., it can see both wlan cells and assume the second is yours (I'd suggest you to switch the router to wpa2psk/ CCMP (sometimes called AES) for security reasons, but this is unrelated). Can you connect to your network now, maybe after "ifup wlan0" or after a reboot? what does "wpa_cli" (as root) say (you get a console to wpasupplicant that way, "status" tells you about the current connection status und you see events scroll by as they appear)? |

But, my router is set to WPA/PSK with AES encryption:
I have not changed any router settings in 6 months. So, that's why I'm wondering about a bug in the driver.
I'll check the status as you suggested with wpa_cli and see what it says.

The key is correct -- I replaced it with asterisks to paste here.
This was after a new boot with the ethernet cable disconnected. It was necessary to issue "ifconfig wlan0 up" to bring up the device -- it was not automatically enabled. |

| For security reasons, I'd suggest to switch "WPA: WPA Mode" from "Auto (WPA or WPA2)" to just WPA2, but this is unrelated to your connectivity issues. The /etc/network/interfaces stanza appears to be correct, though - the wpa_cli log is a bit inconclusive though, other than that it doesn't manage to auth correctly. |

However, today for experimental purposes, I disabled wireless security on my router, and I reconfigured /etc/network/interfaces and wpa_supplicant for pure roaming, as the aptosid manual shows it. (wpa-roam.conf is just the default file with line 30 uncommented.) After a reboot, I attempted to close the link with the Belkin device. Interesting result -- it still "fails authentication".

| Could you please try wpasupplicant from testing, "apt-get install wpasupplicant/testing" - it 'may' be a side effect of d-i team's NMU which switched wpasupplicant to libnl3. |
