Just to inform, it seems that it will take some time for KDE 4.7 to hit aptosid.

this discussion is just about debian testing. Aptosid is based on debian unstable and, as usual, we'll have to wait until packages are ready (snapshots in qt-kde experimental repo, actually empty). When these packages are ready they'll move to (experimenatl?) -> unstable. Here we are. testing is not our business.
I have found this message more alert to me:
Quote:
with the new KDE SC 4.7 release, we will need to do some changes in our
packaging due to the tarballs' split
Anyway if you want to try out kde 4.7 i suggest you to try arch (new netinstall images released today!). Arch is really close to aptosid philosophy, pacman is really powerful (sometimes it seems faster than apt/dpkg), you can always find newer software and the community is great. I use it as a testing system and aptosid as my main: debian packages and slh kernel are the best overall |

belze I tried three times Arch and three times it was broken after a week or so.
On the other hand I have the very first "sidux" installation in a machine and still works
I have test almost the whole DW list and debian unstable (aptosid) is one of the most stable distributions out there. |

Arch is a great distro for learning, but even installing the LiveCD (which is too old and didn't work with my wireless USB) and updating to the latest packages was way too much of a pain. In the end, I had to use the archlinux FTP to get the latest pacman and mirrorlist and go from there. It would be a lot better if their mirrors didn't change so frequently, or if they uncapped their official FTP (or made more frequent LiveCD's).
Arch has nightly builds of their install CD's much like Debian does. |

Arch is not the topic in here - and definitely no help in learning how stuff is properly done in Debian/Aptosid.

it's quite easy to set up an arch installation even using virtualbox, and than try the newest kde version, just to have an idea. I usually do it. I don't use arch as my main system; I said pacman is very nice, faster than apt an my machine, but you're right, the difference is in the packages where debian devs are the best. That's why i'm using arch just to have a quick impression of newer software like kde.
This is the bad side, too much work to achieve such a good quality for a few devs. If I could I would help them, for sure! |
