If I plug in an ethernet cable, eth0 connects automatically at start-up.
But if I leave it unplugged, my WIFI won't connect at start-up.

However, if I just manually issue the command:
sudo ifup wlan0
then WIFI works flawlessly, at both home and work.

It almost seems as if ifup is not being called at start-up.

Please help... I've been trying to fix this for three days!

My pertinent files:

/etc/network/interfaces
      Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# governed by ifplugd
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
  wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa-roam.conf

iface default inet dhcp
iface work inet dhcp
iface home inet dhcp

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa-roam.conf
      Code:
network={
        ssid="WorkWirelessID"
        psk="xxxxxxx"
        id_str="work"
}

network={
        ssid="HomeWirelessID"
        psk="yyyyyyyy"
        id_str="home"
}

network={
        key_mgmt=NONE
        scan_ssid=1
}

/etc/default/ifplugd
      Code:
INTERFACES=""
HOTPLUG_INTERFACES="eth0 wlan0"
ARGS="-q -f -u0 -d10 -w -I"
SUSPEND_ACTION="stop"

$ sudo /etc/init.d/ifplugd status
eth0: ifplugd process for device eth0 running as pid 1772.
wlan0: ifplugd process for device wlan0 running as pid 1733.

BEFORE issuing ifup command:
$ sudo ifplugstatus
lo: link beat detected
eth0: unplugged
wlan0: unplugged

and from dmesg:

[ 14.290693] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 14.510318] e1000e 0000:02:00.0: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X
[ 14.561167] e1000e 0000:02:00.0: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X
[ 14.561705] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

remove wlan0 from ifplugd's configuration - the wifi events are handled by wpa_supplicant/wpa_cli and ifplugd will only interfere with that

I second kelmo. This works:
      Code:
$ cat /etc/default/ifplugd

INTERFACES=""
HOTPLUG_INTERFACES="eth0"
ARGS="-q -f -u0 -d10 -w -I"
SUSPEND_ACTION="stop"
My /etc/network/interfaces has the same setup as yours.

In addition: when using an NFS client I had to manually stop wpa_action and ifup the wireless interface after booting. But I don't think this is your case.

Sounded promising, but removing wlan0 from /etc/default/ifplugd didn't help.

Where I had two ifplugd processes before, I now have only one,
but WIFI still didn't come up with the reboot, yet did with ifup.

FOUND IT, DUH!!!

As shown in interfaces I had:

allow hotplug wlan0

WITHOUT A DASH!

Adding a dash (allow-hotplug) solved it....FINALLY!!
