I don't use printing very often these days.
Today I tried to print for the first time sind d/u last week.
Actually nothing happens.
I am having a HP 4050 LaserJet connected via USB/Parallell Cable
lsusb says
Code:
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305 Parallel Port
which looks okay to me. Cable is connected.
Printer is ready and Online.
Going to the maintenance at
http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/[printername]
the job is pending due to:
"Waiting for printer to become available..."
I also tried to select another papertray but the problem persists. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
[Edit: altered the name of the thread from
Printer not working
into
Printer not recvognised
because it is not recognised anymore. But it did some couple of years b4]
---
Edit 2011-11-14: the matter is solved now. See my post at end of thread. |

Sometimes it helps to remove the printer settings and reinstall it again.
Or maybe you have a "resume printer" menu item in one of the maintainance selection-boxes on the printer's settings page? |

I did some pause and resume before.
Now I reinstalled the printer and the problem persists.
Restarting the computer did not help.
If you need more info - just let me know
[Edit:]
After the restart the page
http://127.0.0.1:631/printers/[$printername]
doesn't show the jobs - so printing doesn't arrive at the queue
Also strange: when (re-)installing the printer it wasn't detected automagically.
To my knowledge most common printers are detected pretty good.
So I think the failure of the connection to the printer is some general fault. |

Perhaps it helps trying the tool "hplip-gui" alias hp-toolbox (maybe started as root)?
But before this you should check the log files in /var/log/cups if there is some more information? |

hp-probe says:
Code:
warning: No devices found on the 'usb' bus. If this isn't the result you are expecting,
warning: check to make sure your devices are properly connected and powered on.
The printer is connected and powered on. |

Just checked from another computer (with $Win). The same printer with the very same cable is printing. |

I tried to connect to any other port - but this didn't alter anything.
Did a du because there were new cups-files available. But the problem persists.
[Edit: Couldn't find anything unordinary in /var/log/cups] )-; |

Parallel-to-USB adapter you using? Those adapters might not work with all printers and possibly need another driver? |

It worked for ~4 years now with the same printer and sidux through aptosid
My guess is that the driver had been changed ... |

For what is worth, I am having the same sort of problems with my HP
Laserjet Professional P1606dn. It stopped working. I had the same
message as you in CUPS (waiting to become available).
I've removed it and tried to add back, and the printer was not found
(CUPS and hp-setup, just like you, same messages). I restarted
everything and eventually the printer was found. I could add it,
although I *think* it was using the foo2zjs-z2 driver before, now it
is using hpcups. (hpijs does not give me duplexing!) But I cannot
print again, with the message "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed".
[EDIT: I can print with hpijs, but not duplexing...]

Keeping an eye on this thread as I am having the exactly same issue as hy, including my printer being an HP LaserJet, connected via USB/parallel cable, and also for me it worked for years. However, recently it stopped doing so, plus, interestingly it seems to not work in Arch either now.
I tried with foomatic, gutenprint, hpijs drivers and whatelse is available in the list. And then again also with kernels 2.6.x and 3.0.
Again the same for me, this same my setup works without problems in Win7.
Not really having a clue, I am suspecting something flawed in cups, being confident that will be fixed magically in a future update..=P |

I know some redhat (also mandrake) people had to downgrade to 3.10 (hp) , but I thought it was fixed for 3.11 (hp) |

If you have a chance to connect your printer through the classic parallel port, that may be a little more reliable than USB - as sad as it sounds (sorry, I don't have a USB printer available right now and my network printer works fine).
It would also be interesting what happens if you purge "system-config-printer-udev" (this is meant to autoconfigure USB printers) and configure the printer by hand (through http://localhost:631). |
