muchan, I know it is not very pure (freedom software wise) and it varies in behavior due to the experimental state of things so I do not complain much about what it does... as I am its master, so I get what I get as it were.
I run this computer for my main desktop and I do keep healthy backups of the data. just in case I really fubar it.
so I am just reporting a curiosity that someone else might benefit from or see what I have done... good and bad.
Love aptosid... and the sometimes stormy seas of experimental are for me just a normal state of things.
I manage to keep it running and keep the x server running.
GIMP and Printing are OK now... just a mystery on the Kubuntu, that was a surprise. |

So, hplip-kubuntu.desktop is not package name that apt can see.
Then,
Quote:
DU last night took away the gimp and hplip and hplip-gui which I will need to put back into operation.
But here is something weird the HP Gui now on the desktop says... hplip-kubuntu.desktop
I never had any install stuff regarding Kubuntu
What is "HP Gui" you mentioned here? (is there proprietary HP gui application installed?)
from where have you "put back" hplip-gui? (but strange message was while it was removed?)
My guess is that this "HP Gui" application was initially programmed for kubuntu,
and has internal error message, that when some component is missing, show the the name
of packages of ubuntu which should contain the comonent, and debian uses other package name,
(probably "hplip-gui"...) |

I decided to just do a d-u anyways to see what happened because the packages it wanted to remove for me were libpulse-browse0, libreoffice-emailmerge, and python-uno. I woke up this morning and did a d-u and noticed a bunch of libreoffice stuff.
Code:
The following packages will be upgraded:
blinken cantor cantor-backend-kalgebra icedtea-netx icedtea-netx-common
kalgebra kalzium kanagram kbruch kgeography khangman kig kiten klettres
kmplot kstars ktouch kturtle kwordquiz libkdeeduui4 libkeduvocdocument4
libkiten4 libmarblewidget11 libreoffice libreoffice-base
libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-calc libreoffice-common libreoffice-core
libreoffice-draw libreoffice-filter-binfilter libreoffice-filter-mobiledev
libreoffice-impress libreoffice-java-common libreoffice-kde
libreoffice-math libreoffice-report-builder-bin libreoffice-style-galaxy
libreoffice-style-oxygen libreoffice-writer libscience4 libsoup2.4-1 marble
marble-plugins parley python-kde4 rocs step ttf-opensymbol uno-libs3 ure
I then tried to reinstall the 3 packages that were removed yesterday to see if things had been fixed yet. libreoffice-emailmerge and python-uno were able to be installed but libpulse-browse0 apparently has no installation candidate. I believe that this was caused by the d-u but is because of a pulseaudio update yesterday, apparently libpulse-browse0 hasn't been updated for the new pulseaudio stuff.
Code:
troy@troy-pc:~$ dpkg -l | grep pulse
ii gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio 0.10.30-1 GStreamer plugin for PulseAudio
rc libpulse-browse0 0.9.23-1 PulseAudio client libraries (zeroconf support)
ii libpulse-dev 1.0-2 PulseAudio client development headers and libraries
ii libpulse-mainloop-glib0 1.0-2 PulseAudio client libraries (glib support)
ii libpulse0 1.0-2 PulseAudio client libraries
ii pulseaudio 1.0-2 PulseAudio sound server
ii pulseaudio-esound-compat 1.0-2 PulseAudio ESD compatibility layer
ii pulseaudio-module-x11 1.0-2 X11 module for PulseAudio sound server
ii pulseaudio-utils 1.0-2 Command line tools for the PulseAudio sound server
ii vlc-plugin-pulse 1.1.11-2+b3 PulseAudio plugin for VLC

muchan, you may very well be correct.
I found the original hplip-3.11.3a self extracting .run file as a downloaded package, likely from HP site itself, I found it in my folder of downloaded drivers. Maybe it was created for ubuntu and I just found that it worked... it became Kubuntu when it built for my KDE desktop.
As I said I have had issues with the printer and have tried every possible software solution to make it work with some reliability. Cups makes it work OK so for the time being I will leave it that way.
This specific four color network printer has always had issues. I do have problems with the ethic of using non-free drivers, I do not want to... but I am also pragmatic in that I will, in a pinch, to make something work.
It is not aptosid's problem here. I just sometimes ask my machine to fly to high to soon.
Thank you for your clues, muchan... that led me to check the origin of the package. It is not from an aptosid or Debian repository. Definitely mystery meat as it were. |

well virt-manager and duplicity are to be removed if i upgrade python. so its not gnome/gconf related.
original post was about gimp after all..
anyway, i dont want to get into this gnome flamewar.
just made a remark that python transition still has problems. |

dpdt1, no flame war intended.
virt-manager depends on gconf. Yes, duplicity is just a python based thingy not in sync with recent changes with Debian sid. It is not the only one, the maintainence quality of python based apps in Debian does vary a lot. However, we do "Upgrade Warnings" only for stuff we include in our releases, and for most common applications - which duplicity and virt-manager defintitely are not.
Greetings,

virt-manager depends on gconf2 and this would not be the problem.
The problem is the dep on python-gtk-vnc, which is not installable since the update to python2.7. |
