OK, but which is the alternative for a "private", that wouldn't pay a vmware license?

i'm using virt-manager with kvm (if your processor supports it) and very happy with it..

Have you got usb support working, I had to give up in the end and use Virtualbox.

didnt have to use usb so far. only using it for various server istances.

vmware player is available in two varieties, one that is free as in beer, and a crippled version that is free as in freedom.

that aside, kvm and xen are your two real choices. i personally use kvm with aqemu as a gui front end when i'm feeling lazy. i know kvm supports usb pass-through, but have not personally tested it.
