Hi Santa, thanks a lot for the heads up.
As usual during larger transitions, we suggest to upgrade with care and ideally wait for all of KDE 4.7.4 to enter sid (typically 1-2 days) before dist-upgrading (and deal with partial upgrades). Thanks to the debian-qt-kde team and the release team clearing the way after the opencv transition. |

How close is it to a safe upgrade . . . some of the removals look like there are package replacements?
Code:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
kdebase-data (4.6.5-1)
kdebase-runtime-data (4.6.5-1)
kdebase-workspace-data (4.6.5-4)
kdebase-workspace-kgreet-plugins (4.6.5-4)
libplasmaclock4abi1 (4.6.5-4)
libtaskmanager4abi1 (4.6.5-4)
plasma-widget-lancelot (4.6.5-1)
plasma-widgets-addons (4.6.5-1)

DU-ed yesterday (07/03/2012) with no problems.
I normally use the German or USA mirrors as they seem to me to be more completely up to date than some others.
The last few years KDE seems to be delivering the upgrades in specific batches which eases the transition. For example this last upgrade began with most of the important core stuff which is probably not the best time to upgrade at least until there are no reported problems.. Next the lesser stuff eg icons etc and today mostly KDE games and some other applications which suggest the upgrade is nearly over.
However for those who need the KDE desktop it's wise to keep coming here for a couple more days to check if others are having any problems. |

| Which of the above will be removed in an error-free d-u? |

The 1st 4 on your list are not installed on my machine. When I try to install them apt-get wants to remove a lot of KDE packages so I presume they are no longer needed. Won't have the time today to check if that is indeed the case.
The plasma stuff is still missing from the upgrade. |

As this is a major update, it will be several days before all the new packages are in place, so as what others suggest it is best to keep checking this space for news |

As I'm down to the following removals, it looks as if all these packages are replaced or superceded. Can anyone confirm this?
Code:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
kdebase-data (4.6.5-1)
kdebase-runtime-data (4.6.5-1)
kdebase-workspace-data (4.6.5-4)
kdebase-workspace-kgreet-plugins (4.6.5-4)
libplasmaclock4abi1 (4.6.5-4)
libtaskmanager4abi1 (4.6.5-4)

| While they are, the KDE 4.7.4 uploads aren't complete yet and the smart user continues to wait until KDE 4.7.4 is completely available (even though it shouldn't kill your system anymore). |

| As the last two packages are just libraries, you usually can safely remove them, as long as no other packages are going to be removed by them. Otherwise the deb dependencies were not well defined. |

I presume :
libplasmaclock4abi1 (4.6.5-4) is replaced by libplasmaclock4abi2 (4.7.4-2
and
libtaskmanager4abi1 (4.6.5-4) is replaced by libtaskmanager4abi2 (4.7.4-2) |

After a d-u yesterday I cannot login to KDE anymore. I see the loginscreen but then nothing happens. When I choose fluxbox as desktop it works. Another d-u just now did not help. What is going wrong?
Anyway, this is my first time I use fluxbox an I like it! What is the difference between fluxbox and Xfce? |
