seems 'dialog' may have bin removed in recent mass removals

check with

      Code:
$ apt-cache policy dialog
dialog:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.1-20120215-1


if so, just

      Code:
 # apt-get install dialog

Some apps might still use dialog rather than whiptail
