Hi I am having a strange problem on my daughters laptop:
When trying to log in in X, the login screen is being reloaded after entering passwd and pressing enter.
I can log in as root or user in a console. But when I do some
init 3
log in as user and then do
startx
the computer hangs.
[Edit: switching back to the console <CTRL-F1> shows repeatedly the message:
no protocol specified
]
Any ideas? Let me know if you need more information about the system and which information.
Thanks in advance. |

Well, after freeing sda1 from lot of stuff the problem persists.
This workaround works, but is quite bad for daily use:
Log in as root or user in a console. <After>
Then type
init 3
Log off
log in as user and then do
startx
Any ideas welcome |

# apt-get clean
or, first check what files are occupying the space, and think the way
to free them. (deleting, moving or backup and delete, etc.) |

Hi muchan. Actually I have freed 25GB of diskspace which is sufficient.
(Before that the workaround mentioned above didn't work). |

Still the problem persists:
One can not log in into X
This workaround works, but is quite bad for daily use:
Log in as root <CTRL> to a console.
Then type
init 3
Log off
log in as user and then do
startx
But this is too hard for daily use (for my daughter).
Any ideas welcome |

Which desktop you use?
(Which desktop you try to use when you login in X?
Which desktop your startx starts?)
You would need to compare what startx scripts actually does,
with what kdm/gdm is configured to do after login is successful.
(something is wrong with your kdm/gdm's configuration file, or
S*kdm or S*gdm scripts in /etc/rc5.d/ directory... if the answer
to above questions are the same...) |

Desktop: KDE
How could I debug the S*kdm or S*gdm scripts in /etc/rc5.d/ directory? |

There are no scripts under /etc/rc5.d/, just symlinks to scripts under /etc/init.d/, those would be the ones to edit - but make very sure to save a pristine copy for backup purposes, because files under /etc/ are treated as conffiles (which means once you edit them, they won't upgrade anymore). Basically the same principles apply than for any other scripts (set -x), plus eventually coupled with a serial console (or netconsole) for monitoring or single stepping. Personally I'd be rather surprised if your symptoms were acutally caused by the kdm/ gdm initscripts though. |

slh: Yes, I had a thorough look at them, but won't alter anything - cause I don't see any reason to change any of them.
Besides: editing one or more of these files and see how the system behaves by trial and error - more or less - is nothing I would do...
On the other hand - as noted above: init 5 works when it is started the second time. So, the error mustn't be really in init 5.
But anyway I would love to get rid of the error/this behaviour. |

I'm having the same issue on an up-to-date Aptosid. If I let it boot normally and start KDE I get the "wait" cursor and a black screen. I can move the mouse, but the keyboard will not respond (not even to light the "Caps Lock", which did work until X loaded), except allowing my to use SysRq commands. At that point all I can realistically do is reboot.
If I follow the advice above (more or less: I change the boot parameters to go to init 3; login as root; run startx, which fails; and then do init 5 to finally get the logon screen [which has a different style to before this issue]), then I am able to log in, but it is very inconvenient. Any further advice to resolve this? |
