After attempting in vain to use a VM to upgrade the firmware on a friend's iPod Video 5.5 (to get better functionality in Banshee, Amarok and with a JVC TV with iPod dock) I tried it the "Linux way®" and it was so easy (thanks to the GNUpod manual):

iPod Firmware update

USB 2.0 support seems problematic with qemu-kvm, at least as regards this iPod and with USB 1.1, the iPod isn't detected at all by the VM.

Why using a VM if there is a working native method?
Greetings,
Chris

Maybe your question is rhetorical Wink but to provide an answer, before I found out about the GNUpod manual, I knew how to put the firmware on the iPod, but I didn't know how to get it from Apple (I had only seen the firmware here, which cmp showed to be the same).

One small issue with the GNUpod manual is that it refers to the sbp2 module which has now been replaced by the firewire-sbp2 module since Linux 2.6.37.

I had used the same qemu-kvm XP VM yesterday to to update the maps on a Garmin Nuvi 3790LMT GPS (slow but worked) since Garmin also provides just Win/Mac support. I'll also put some open maps on it the GNULinux way®.
