Hello friends,
I changed my monitor and with the new one I have to use HDMI but the sound does not work. Here some information about my system:

I think it is not the same problem because it seems that my system does not know a HDMI card and there is neither a /etc/asound.conf nor a /etc/asoundrc.

I've no idea really about NVidia like which drivers can support HDMI audio or what configuration they might need. I think from your infobash that you are using the non-free NVidia driver and afair you must have an xorg.conf to use that, so I'm going to guess you will have to enable HDMI audio output in your xorg.conf?

First, I don't see an hdmi item in aplay -L. Without it hdmi audio will never work.

For example:
      Quote:

If your hdmi audio is working you will see it in KDE 4 System settings/Multimedia

Second, I would install the latest nvidia, 256.53

I have an Nvidia card that makes use of HDMI, and did not have to do anything to set it up. In the KDE System Settings - Multimedia, one of my outputs is ALC1200 Digital. This is where the hdmi audio comes out. The ALC1200 Analog output is the one that plays through my regular monitor speakers.

I am using the prorietry Nvidia Driver, and my xorg.conf is setup for this, but there is no specific entry for HDMI.

In kmix, make sure "PCM" and "IEC958" are unmuted. Then use KDE System Settings - Mulitmedia to test and set priorities. You may find that your system is trying to output analog video before the digital HDMI stream.

Hi azza,
if you can see at the output of aplay -L in my system exists an digital output too via SPDIF. I connected this output on the motherboard with the SPDIF-input on the nvidia card but without a success. Must I activate the output on the motherboard? How can I do this?
Because I use Xfce I don't have KDE multimedia settings but in my mixer PCM and IEC958 are enabled.

Hi Peter,
Yes, I had to make that motherboard to video card SPDIF connection as well to make the HDMI work. That is also where the HDMI audio comes from on your card. Apart from making the actual connection, there was nothing to activate. (Check your BIOS just in case there is something on your system, but I doubt it).

Precautions:
- Use the instructions that came with your motherboard to check that you have the GND and SPIDFOUT connections around the right way.
- On my Nvidia card (GeForce 9500GT) only one of the DVI connectors (#2) can support the HDMI adaptor. Check your Nvidia manual to see that you are using the correct DVI connector.
- Not sure about Xfce, but in KDE, different applications default to different audio outputs. So when you're ready, test your audio with a video player, a music player, and something that outputs system sounds.
