Dear all,

a couple of days I du-ed despite xpdf going, because I don't need it.

Today I got
      Code:
Entpacken von libmotif-common (aus .../libmotif-common_2.3.4-3_all.deb) ...
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von /var/cache/apt/archives/libmotif-common_2.3.4-3_all.deb (--unpack):
Versuch, »/usr/include/X11/bitmaps/xm_hour16« zu überschreiben, welches auch in Paket libmotif3 2.3.3-1 ist
Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/libmotif-common_2.3.4-3_all.deb

any suggestions before I bork my system?

tx, yamaneko

No, we are not removing files tracked by dpkg!
(dpkg should still complain anyway as it tracks file-ownership in a database)

Given that libmotif3 seems to be pretty old (or even unofficial) as I can't find it in Debian oldstable/stable/testing/unstable try to remove the package:
      Code:
apt-get remove libmotif3

If that isn't removing anything of value for you it should resolve your issue.

Otherwise ensure that nothing else is unconfigured which doesn't need to be
      Code:
dpkg --configure --pending

(which probably fails with the same message as your upgrade, its just for safety)
And wait for the bug being resolved.

[There is also a magic force-flag for dpkg to overwrite the file, but this check isn't in place to annoy people, but to protect them from bad things happening, so I will not mention it here as its better solved by waiting for a fix to appear [or getting right of the offending package if it isn't needed])

Thanks to all!

apt-get remove libmotif3 ended with the same error message.

dpkg --configure --pending was very helpful to get the other stuff ahead. It ended with
      Code:
Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
 libxm4:amd64
 libmrm4:amd64
 xpdf
 libuil4:amd64
 libmotif4:amd64

trying to remove any of them or all of them ended in nice circles of unmet dependencies...

Alas, we'll never surrender anyway Smile

Cheers, Yamaneko

If it was really this message again and the apt-get remove call really included no other packages in the remove list you can sidestep apt-get by instructing dpkg directly to remove the package:
      Code:
dpkg --remove libmotif3
apt-get install --fix-broken

(The later command should fix you up then.)

Thanks, DonKult!
