I did not have a /etc/insserv/overrides/lightdm file, even after a reinstall and purge/install of distro-defaults.

Fyi:
      Code:
$ cat /etc/aptosid-version
aptosid 2011-03 Πόνος - xfce - (201112312100)

After adding /etc/insserv/overrides/lightdm manually, doing a purge and reinstall of lightdm, and doing
      Code:
update-rc.d lightdm start 24 5 . stop 01 0 1 2 3 4 6 .
, I got lightdm to to away on init 3.

Any idea why distro-defaults doesn't give me /etc/insserv/overrides/lightdm?

That's weird. You're only one aptosid version different from me. When I issued the command it replied thus:
      Code:
# apt-get install --reinstall distro-defaults
distro-defaults: overriding LSB init info for lightdm...

Does your machine say the same? If not, tell us if there's any error message, and maybe someone cleverer than I can give clues...

And thanks again Donkult for even more wisdom Smile
