Post subject: Very slow usb HD [solved]  PostPosted: 11.10.2010, 11:40

Recently my external USB driver becomes very slow.
It used to transfer data with 10-15 MB/s.
Now when I transfer large files seems to be stuck.

The disk is a SUMSUNG F1 1TB, used only for buckup.

I used smartmontools and the disk seems ok.
but
      Quote:
hdparm -t /dev/sdb1
/dev/sdb1:
Timing buffered disk reads: 4 MB in 4.35 seconds = 941.28 kB/sec

It is much lower than in the past....

Probably that is a USB issue. Seems like USB1.1 and not USB2.

Any idea about this problem please?
Thank you
snvv

EDIT: some more info
      Code:
hdparm  /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]:  70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
 multcount     =  0 (off)
 readonly      =  0 (off)
 readahead     = 256 (on)
 geometry      = 77825/255/63, sectors = 1250263728, start = 0

      Code:
[   41.505037] usb 3-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2

This does not look like usb 1.1, the system is seeing and using usb 2.

So what could be the problem?.
I have the issue in two external disks (1TB & 640GB) just retested.

Is it possible to find an older aptosid or sidux kernel?
Using apt I can get the latest only.

blackhole I tried two different cables.

HeSaid Yes I tried and the outcome is about the same.

I am going to use a sata connector and I will use the disk with e-sata. I will report latter if I have any improvement in this situation.

Thank you for the help

If it used to work well with aptosid and it doesn't work well with the live CD, then it seems that it is a hardware problem. Unless you hadn't DUed in a long time. In that case you could try an old sidux live CD.

Or maybe I am way off... (It seems to happen a lot.)

Good luck,

Luis

Thank you
Tomorrow I will know if it is a hardware problem or not.
I am going to get a e-sata cable to test the disks.

Using various tests the disks seems to be healthy, (any way they are not old and used only for backup).

Ok it is a usb problem.
I connected the 1TB drive with 2m long e-sata cable.

      Quote:
hdparm -t /dev/sdb1

/dev/sdb1:
Timing buffered disk reads: 414 MB in 3.00 seconds = 137.90 MB/sec
root@aptosid:/media# hdparm -t /dev/sdb2

/dev/sdb2:
Timing buffered disk reads: 394 MB in 3.00 seconds = 131.28 MB/sec

How can automount the drive?
When I select it in Dolphin I get
      Quote:
"an error occurred while accessing "MyData". The system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.VolumePermissionDenied: Refusing to mount device /dev/sdb2 for uid=1001"

Ok that was a bios problem.
I reset the bios in fail-safe mode and now the transfer rates increased to 20-25 MB/s.

Thank you for the help.
