Dear all,

I've been noticing that iceweasel 28.0-1 (from experimental, up to
date) has been using a lot of memory. I understand that unused memory
is wasted memory, but I was wondering it is normal.

To rule out extensions, I've been running it in safe-mode, and the same happens.

I do have few tab "open", but not all have been loaded (as I haven't
used them since restart, so only like 10 are actually active).

Here is the system:

      Code:

Host/Kernel/OS  "t510" running Linux 3.14-0.slh.2-aptosid-amd64 x86_64 [ sidux 2010-01 Ύπνος - kde-full - (201006131622) ]
CPU Info        4x Intel Core i5 M 520 @ 3072 KB cache flags( sse3 ht nx lm vmx ) clocked at [ 1199.000 MHz ]
Videocard       NVIDIA GT218M [NVS 3100M]     [  ]
Network cards   Intel 82577LM Gigabit
                Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200
Processes 279 | Uptime 8:33 | Memory 2431.4/3821.8MB | HDD C300-CTFDDAC128M Size 128GB (77%used) | Client Shell | Infobash v3.46

Here is "free" after running iceweasel for an hour or so:

      Code:

root@t510[/home/finotti]# free
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:       3913528    3606656     306872      53852      37648    1112896
-/+ buffers/cache:    2456112    1457416
Swap:      9437180         48    9437132

Here it is after closing it:

      Code:

root@t510[/home/finotti]# free
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:       3913528    2729612    1183916      46544      43104    1123504
-/+ buffers/cache:    1563004    2350524
Swap:      9437180         48    9437132

You can see an image with the output of "htop" while using iceweasel
here: http://www.math.utk.edu/~finotti/misc/snapshot1.png.

(Is it normal for it to have so many different processes?)

Is this memory usage normal?

Thanks,

Luis

Memory usage of a web browser depends massively on the web pages you're visiting. Javascript or flash(-like) content can drive it up significantly and iceweasel isn't particularly good at freeing memory after closing pages. On top of that you also need to distinguish between M_SIZE (VIRT) and M_RESIDENT (RES).

Typical for my usage is somewhere around 200 MB actual RAM usage (RES) and ~1.4 GB (VIRT), even after several hours of (moderate) use. But at other times, with more interactive content, I have seen upper single digit GB memory usage (albeit typically with 500-600 open tabs).

"about:memory" is an 'interesting' page if you feel like wanting to figure out what is eating memory in iceweasel. I wouldn't care too much. It probably pays off more to just buy more RAM. That said, I have 4GB here as well and not really a problem with Iceweasel either and it runs for ages here with a bunch of extensions. It is surely the application which eats the most memory on my system, but that isn't hard in my usage pattern… (most other applications I use are console based).

The many icweasel lines in your screenshot are btw "threads". And yes, having a couple of them is normal. You can disable the display of them in htop if you think they are confusing. Tree-view might also help in understanding the interconnection of processes and threads.

To illustrate the usage dependency: for me it says the page here takes ~5 MB. I happen to have jenkins.debian.net console log open which eats a whopping ~150 MB.
