Well, Desktop-Linux developed courtesy W$, and distros like Ubuntu help in getting users to Linux.
Once in Linux,many distro-hop. Some keep on hopping, some like me stop at aptosid.
Debian does not need Ubuntu, and I see everything as positive. |

I don't think that's true - everyone needs his gateway drug, and Ubuntu does this job very well for all the people coming from Windoof or Äpple. The usage is similar, everything has a nice little GUI. Perfect for beginners.
Sooner or later the will have a look beyond their horizon - and then they will learn, that there are some disadvantages in Ubuntu (most of them are of philosophical nature or of principal) The will start distro-hopping or switch to debian at once. There are already used to a debian-like system, so "pure debian" is not that big step.
But if you think of the step from Windows to Debian - for most users this step is to high, they don't have time and motivation, most user say: the PC has to work - afterwards we can talk about philosophy and principles, but it has to work first!
You will hardly convince a user to use free software, only because its free - but if he can try free software, recognizes that it works, and then recognizes that this gives him freedom "for free", he will be convinced. And I think Ubuntu does a very good job giving people the opportunity to test a linux-system.
Debian needs Ubuntu as one possibility to reach new users, and Ubuntu needs Dabian as a base. I think both are a bit like siblings - the don't like every single bit of each other, but what would the do without the other? |

even though i can agree with the latter on a sunny day, it does not refute the line you quoted.
debian was doing fine without ubuntu for a decade (and people called it irrelevant because they were to noobish to install it)
ubuntu would be dead in the water pretty soon without debian (give it 1 year) same goes for aptosid.
