Just made an du after a while and got problems with this grub-pc 1.99~rc1-2:

Installed the old version from testing grub-pc 1.98+20100804-14 and everything is fine again.

I have a 32-bit system.

it seems that you have syntax in grub.cfg, that the old version tolerates and the new one does not. i had no syntax probs with 1.99~rc1-2.

why not post your grub.cfg so people who know more can help spot the problem and show you how to fix it

Thank your for your answers. After searching a while for this error I found a forgotten script in /etc/grub.d which I had written a while a go. I deleted it and voila - it works.
