One ask the question 'if this is the time to go back to Ubuntu?', when got remove problems with list of useful packages like gimp by last d-u.
Today solusion for this is to prepare your hd to play with some partitions as modern disks have a lot of space to do this.
So, I had prepared two similar partitions for aptosid. No 1 for work and No 2 for test. D-u starting at part No 2 and after positive effect Part No 1 is dist-upgrading. It is safe solution. For my work I use many extra packges like Virtual-Box non-OSE (usb support) with WinXP Machine (as I use some programs that has no full compability with Linux systems as AutoCad and some of Government packages for National Health and Insurance System), GIMP, video and audio transcoders, etc.
For better performance I use apt caching system on my local server.
The result is:
1. Stable aptounstable (read: aptosid) with newest as possible packages ready for everyday work.
2. Possibility for testing some kind of solutions in using packages, desktops (KDE, LXDE, etc.)
3. Possibility for testing and learning of Linux and Debian System. |

Full ack. But you should rethink your strategy and eventually decide to have 3 working Installations The first one can be debian stable for administration purposes and grub. The second is your working installation and the third is testing.
In this case you can make a copy of your working environment to testing without hassle from the administration installation. After the copy process you had only to reload some files in etc like fstab and so on and you can test with your real word installation. Normaly a copy of 10 or 15 G took 5 minutes. For me this isn't a waste of time. And when it kills your testing - who cares, it took 5 minutes to rebuild testing. |

Ubuntu will never be my choice, though I am testing a varient called Vinux that is speech enabled for visually impaired users. My girlfriend is blind, and wants to be able to use her computer without the vastly overpriced Win7, and screen reader software, which she cannot afford. |

There is no need for installing Debian Stable - the latest Aptosid live CD or USB-stick will do.
Greetings,
Chris
You are right. But for a administration environment i prefer a stable version which never change to much And a boot into a administration environment is much faster then stick or cd. (I hate Live-CDs or sticks) |

I d-u using -d option. Wait for a day, look at the forums, do not apt-get update again, and then press GO.
Never in more than 2 years had any problems. |

On the contrary, I love sticks, as my little memory stick OCZ Diesel with iso and persist is so small that it is a part of my home/car keychain. Wherever I am I put my pendrive into any usb hole and... a place where actually I am became place of my work.
So small, so easy, so comfortable... |
